Chimi Burger #EattheWorld

In the Dominican Republic they call their burgers Chimichurri, not to be confused with the condiment served in Argentina.  The name is the same but these burgers known casually as a Dominican Chimi Burger are all about the sauce and the toppings.

Each month, under the guidance and direction of Evelyne of CulturEatz we gather together to research and prepare foods from a different country.  I love learning about a culture through it's foods and this is one of my favorite events each month.

Check out all the wonderful Dominican Republic dishes prepared by fellow Eat the World members and share with #eattheworld. Click here to find out how to join and have fun exploring a country a month in the kitchen with us!

So what makes these burgers special?  It all about the sauce and the toppings!!  This sauce is delicious.  I made these burgers for family dinner one night.  On Memorial day, I again had the family over and again put burgers on the grill.  Our son in law eagerly went up to the buffet and then he turned to me and asked "where is the sauce"?  He was very disappointed that I didn't replicate the recipe again.

Chimi Burger Pin

I found this recipe on a site called Dominican Cooking.  According to the author, Clara Gonzalez, the burgers, dripping sauce, are found throughout the Dominican Republic in street stands.  Each has their own unique flavor.  Clara shared her flavor with us here and I'm sharing my flavor with you today.

I started with frozen hamburger patties.  I buy them in bulk at Costco and keep them in my freezer all summer long.  They are wonderful to have on hand because they can be put onto the grill frozen and you can take out as many as you need when unexpected guests come by to enjoy the weather and pool at our backyard oasis. I buy both beef patties and impossible burgers for those who abstain from meat.

I decided to grill my tomato and red onion along with the burgers and dressed the cabbage in a little of the sauce, allowing others to add more sauce as desired.

In the Dominican Republic they call their burgers Chimichurri, not to be confused with the condiment served in Argentina. The name is the same but these burgers known casually as a Dominican Chimi Burger are all about the sauce and the toppings.
Prep time: 15 MinCook time: 20 MinTotal time: 35 Min

Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. ketchup
  • 1/2 c. Miracle Whip
  • Juice of 1 orange
  • 1 T. Worcestershire Sauce
  • 6 hamburger patties
  • 1 red onion, thickly sliced
  • 2-3 tomatoes, thickly sliced
  • 1 T. olive oil
  • 2 c. shredded cabbage
  • 6 hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Combine the ketchup, mayonnaise, orange juice and Worcestershire sauce. Set aside.
  2. Season your hamburger patties and place on the grill, cooking to desired degree.
  3. Meanwhile, brush the tomato and onion slices with olive oil, season with salt and pepper and place onto the same grill as your burgers. Cook for a couple of minutes on each side until onion starts to soften and grill marks appear on the vegetables.
  4. Place onto a serving tray. Toss the cabbage with about 1/4 cup of the sauce and place it on the serving tray with the tomatoes and onions.
  5. Place the buns onto the grill to warm, if desired. Place on hamburger patty onto each bun and pass the condiment tray and extra sauce for each person to dress as desired.

  1. That sauce sounds so similar to an "orange sauce" that a local Mexican restaurant serves...and sells by the squeeze bottle!
