This Is Not About Us was chosen by Debra of Eliot's Eats as our April Lit Happens selection. Lit Happens is an online book club where each month one of the members chooses a book and posts discussion questions on our Facebook Page. We read the book at our leisure and answer the questions when we finish. It is a fun, no-stress book club to belong to.
This is a novel about family dynamics. Every family has their own dynamics. My family is multicultural, with varying degrees of dietary restrictions. I laughed as I read about the family trying to make a Kosher Vegan Thanksgiving Dinner. They make it much harder on themselves than I do, since they were trying to meet those standards for the entire meal. I normally just try to serve a variety of dishes so that everyone has something to enjoy
The novel is written with each chapter functioning as a short story from the viewpoint of one of the characters, including a dog. I thought it was a pretty accurate depiction of life in a large, multi-generational family.
Unlike my other book clubs, Lit Happens has no requirement to share a recipe inspired by the book we read. However, I find myself in the kitchen with ideas from nearly every book I read and movie I watch.
This dish was inspired by that Thanksgiving scene, mentioned above. These potatoes would be perfect for a Kosher Thanksgiving Dinner. They are vegan, made with only potatoes, olive oil, and seasonings, making them a perfect alternative to mashed potatoes with butter and cream.
Speaking of seasonings, I stopped by The Quail and Olive during a recent visit to Carmel Valley, California, where I met up with my friend, Cam, the administrator of Lit Happens and owner of Culinary Cam.
The Quail and Olive is a wonderful specialty food store featuring locally made products. I purchased several items, including a sea salt seasoned with basil and garlic, and had them shipped home. They arrived the day before I made these potatoes, and I used the seasoning with great results. Frank even commented on how the potatoes were perfectly seasoned!!
This is a very easy recipe that can be made ahead of time, smashed, and set aside at room temperature. They will need only about 10 minutes under the broiler before serving.
Yield: 4 servings

Crispy Roasted Potatoes
Creamy, sweet, new potatoes boiled until tender, smashed flat, drizzled with olive oil, sprinkled with seasonings, and broiled to a golden brown.
Prep time: 3 MinCook time: 30 MinTotal time: 33 Min
Ingredients
- 2-3 new potatoes per person
- water to cover
- olive oil
- seasoning salt of choice (I used garlic, basil, sea salt)
Instructions
- Place the potatoes in a large, oven-safe skillet. Cover with water and place over high heat. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer until tender, about 20 minutes.
- Drain the potatoes and add about a Tablespoon of olive oil to the skillet. Return the potatoes to the skillet, and use a glass to press down on the potatoes, breaking them open and flattening them.
- Drizzle with additional olive oil, season, and place under a broiler for 10 minutes or until they reach your desired level of crispness.
