This novel explores what may have happened after Dorothy's return to Sunbonnet, Kansas from the Land of OZ.
Sunbonnet, Kansas in 1896, is filled with prejudice, anger, fear, and hatred. The residents have never left their little neck of the woods and fear anyone and anything that challenges their narrow, religious convictions.
When Dorothy is found 3 days after the tornado destroyed much of Sunbonnet she relates her experience visiting OZ, meeting witches and wizards, talking animals, and her tearful confession of melting the Wicked Witch, which was not her intention at all as she was just trying to save her best friend, the talking scarecrow.
The town finds her story sacrilegious and evil, however, Dorothy has always been a "strange, dreamy" child and they figure it is just the result of a bad dream or concussion. That is, until a local woman, scorned and considered a witch by the community is found "melted" by someone throwing lye on her.
The townsfolk have a meeting where the town elders decide the best thing to do is commit Dorothy to an insane asylum in Topeka, Kansas. This trial debacle is witnessed by reporter, Frank Baum, who contacts his cousin, a female psychologist, who decides to go and talk to this girl with the fantastical story.
While the townsfolk are trying to decide what to do with Dorothy and the damage caused by the tornado they have a cherry pie contest after church one day. I thought I would make a cherry pie when I returned home and share it with this review.
Remembering the cherry pie I wanted to make for this review, I decided to combine the two ingredients into one pie. I found this recipe on Food.com. It calls for only 4 ingredients and requires no baking....perfect for making on vacation and easy enough for the simpletons living in Sunbonnet.
This pie was delicious. Nobody will ever guess that it took only 5 minutes of your day to make this dessert that was the perfect ending for a meal of local Ono that Steve prepared while I threw together a salad. A wonderful meal in less than 30 minutes from when we walked into the door from sight-seeing.
I will make this easy pie again, but next time I will add a layer of fudge sauce over the bananas before adding the cherries and perhaps a drizzle of chocolate along with the sprinkle of nuts.

I love how easy this is to put together! Banana and cherry does seem like a different combination!
ReplyDeleteIt reminded me of a banana split without the ice cream.
DeleteI think I would love this book! I will definitely pick it up.
ReplyDeletePerhaps I will choose it for a Lit Happens event. Maybe March?
