Venison Tater Tot Shepherd's Pie

The Sunday Funday blogging theme for today is Hunter/Gatherer.....

Stacy of Food Lust People Love is hosting this week and chose this great Fall theme.  I am lucky enough to have neighbors who go deer hunting each year and provide me with bounty for my freezer.  I'm anxious to see what the others are hunting for or gathering from the fall harvest this year.......

Venison Tater Tot Pie

If you are not lucky enough to have access to venison, you can always use beef.  Watching your red meat intake?  Try it with ground turkey.

Venison Tater Tot Shepherds Pie

This comforting casserole uses Venison instead of Beef, Tater Tots instead of Mashed Potatoes, and offers Gravy on the Side.

Prep time: 15 MinCook time: 30 MinTotal time: 45 Min

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. ground venison
  • one onion, chopped
  • 1 pkg. frozen mixed vegetables, thawed and drained
  • 1/2 t. cumin
  • 1/2 t. paprika
  • 1/2 t. oregano
  • 1 T. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 pkg. (2 lb) frozen tater tots
  • 2 c. Mexican Blend Cheese
  • 1/4 c. butter
  • 1/4 c. flour
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 c. beef broth

Instructions

  1. Place the venison and onion in a cast-iron or oven-safe skillet. Season with the cumin, paprika and oregano and cook until no longer pink.
  2. Stir in the vegetables, 1 cup of the cheese, and Worcestershire sauce.
  3. Top with the tater tots and sprinkle with remaining cheese. Bake in a preheated 375* oven for 20-30 minutes, until tater tots are crispy brown and cheese is melted.
  4. While the casserole is baking, melt the butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the flour, season with salt and pepper.
  5. Cook, stirring until browned and nutty-smelling. Whisk in the broth until smooth. Cook and stir until the gravy reaches the desired consistency, adding more broth if needed.
  6. Serve the casserole right from the skillet, allowing people to add gravy as desired.

  1. I'm intrigued by the addition of cheese to the filling. I must try that next time. I love the tater tot topping! So much easier and quicker than making mashed potatoes.
