Swedish Meatballs~~Recipe Redo #SundayFunday

Beef and Pork combined with spices to make tender, juicy meatballs in a savory gravy.  I like to serve mine over egg noodles but they are just as delicious over mashed potatoes if that is your preference.

It is my week to host our Sunday Funday Blogging group and I asked the others to join me in sharing their favorite Meatball recipes.  Let's take a look....

Swedish Meatballs

I first shared this recipe with you in 2013 when I first started blogging.  The recipe is no longer printable from that post so I wanted to redo it under the new format.

We had our friend, Chet, over for dinner.  Normally I make him meatloaf but I decided to update this recipe instead.  Of course, when I went to link to my go-to meatloaf recipe I saw that it needs to be updated too.  Oh well, we will just have to invite him over again.

Swedish Meatballs

Beef and Pork combined with spices to make tender, juicy meatballs in a savory gravy. I like to serve mine over egg noodles but they are just as delicious over mashed potatoes if that is your preference.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. onion, chopped
  • 1 T. butter or olive oil
  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1 lb. ground pork (or you can use all ground beef if you prefer)
  • 2 c. fresh bread crumbs
  • 1 c. milk
  • 1/4 t. each ginger, allspice, and nutmeg.
  • 1 c. butter
  • 1 c. flour
  • 4 c. beef broth
  • salt and pepper to taste.

Instructions

  1. Saute onion in 1 T. butter or olive oil. Set aside to cool a bit.
  2. Place the bread crumbs in a large bowl, add the milk, and let sit until the milk is absorbed and the onions are cooled.
  3. Add the cooled onion, beef, and pork to the breadcrumbs. Season with salt, pepper, ginger, allspice and nutmeg. Use clean hands to mix until thoroughly combined.
  4. Shape into 1 1/2-2" balls and bake at 400* for 20 minutes. While meatballs are baking make the gravy.
  5. Melt butter in a large saucepan or Dutch oven. Blend in flour and cook until brown and bubbly. Add broth and bring to a boil, stirring constantly until thickened. Taste and season with salt and pepper. Add meatballs to the gravy and heat through.
