I am nearly to the end of the Gamache series written thus far. Today I am reviewing the 18th in the series, A World of Curiosities.
This book was written in 2022. There are two more currently available, released in 2024 and 2025. I look forward to those.
This novel is named for The Paston Treasure, a 17th century painting. In this book Gamache and the residents of Three Pines uncover a replica of the painting that seems to have hidden messages for each of the residents in the town.
What follows is a collision of Gamache's present and past as he struggles to beat the clock and solve the clues before time runs out. As the investigation ensues, we find Gamache and his wife in the kitchen where Reine-Marie is making lunch. Their son-in-law, Gamache's right hand man, enters the kitchen and is offered lunch. He begs off as he has an interview/lunch engagement but leaves regretfully as the smell of Grilled Gruyere and Sweet Onion Sandwiches calls to him.
This sandwich called to me as well. I had just made a loaf of Swiss Onion Rye and thought it would be the perfect bread for this sandwich. Oh My YUM!! I was so right.
Here we are, at another Friday. I can't believe it is already Mid-March. We are in full Lenten swing, preparing for Easter and Spring. But first let's celebrate St. Patrick's Day. I don't have a bit of Irish in me, however, I do enjoy Irish food and always celebrate a Bit o' the Green.
We were supposed to start our St. Pat's celebration tonight at my brother's birthday dinner. Unfortunately, I came down with the creeping crud and I don't feel up to entertaining. More importantly, I do not want to pass this on to anyone. Frank will pick up Fish and Chips from the local diner for dinner tonight. On Sunday, we were to continue the celebration with a birthday dinner for my Marina, but I have also canceled that gathering.
Monday is St. Patrick's Day, we will enjoy a Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner. Tuesday we will have leftovers before I meet up with Michelle, Amy, and Kris for another painting class at the Water Street Winery and Brewing Company. Hopefully, I will be well enough to follow through with these plans.
So here is my Weekly Menu. I am linking up with Foodies Reads. Stop by and see what the other foodies are reading this month. Below the weekly menu, I am sharing the recipe for this delicious sandwich.

Grilled Gruyere and Sweet Onion Sandwich
Caramelized onions combined with creamy Gruyere cheese on thick slices of rye bread before being grilled to perfection.
Ingredients
- 1 small sweet onion, thinly sliced
- 2 t. olive oil
- salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 slices thick rye bread (I used Swiss Onion Rye)
- 2 oz. thinly sliced gruyere cheese
- 1 t. butter
Instructions
- Place the oil and sliced onion into a skillet over medium heat and season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized and golden brown, 15-20 minutes. Remove to a plate and set aside.
- Butter two slices of Rye bread. Lay one slice, butter side down into the same skillet used for the onions, increase heat to medium high.
- Place cheese slices to cover the slice in the pan. Pile on desired amount of onion, reserving any extra for another sandwich or purpose, and top with remaining cheese slices. Top with the remaining slice of bread, butter side up.
- Cook until bottom slice of bread is toasted and golden brown and the cheese has started to melt. Flip and place a weighted plate on top of the sandwich and continue to grill until the second side is golden brown and the inside is gooey.
