Beef Shwarma over Hummus

We are traveling to Lebanon this month as we Eat the World.........
Eat the World Logo

I LOVE Middle Eastern Food and was very happy when Lebanon was chosen for this month's destination.
The only problem is that I cook it and eat it a lot. This means that I have shared all of my recipes with you over the years.  I needed to find a new recipe to share with you today.

While this dish is not new to our household the cooking method is.  I found this recipe on the Instant Pot website.  It was extremely easy.  I used store bought hummus as a bed for the Shwarma but hummus is also an easy recipe to put together.  You might want to try this Beef Shwarma or Chicken Shwarma  over my Beet Hummus or Artichoke Hummus.

You could also forego the hummus completely and serve it with Lebanese Rice.  I chose to serve it with a Lebanese Salad and Homemade Pita.  I opened up a bottle of Aglianico to pair with the meal and it was wonderful.  You can read about that pairing in this month's Italian Food Wine and Travel post.

I see a couple of new recipes that I haven't made yet.....I'm so excited to go and read about them so I can include them in an upcoming menu!!!

Prep time: 10 MinCook time: 20 MinTotal time: 30 Min

Ingredients

  • 2 T. olive oil
  • 2 lbs. sirloin steak, trimmed of fat and bones, cut into bite size strips
  • 1 Vidalia onion, sliced
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 t. allspice
  • 1 t. pepper
  • 1/2 t. cloves
  • 1/2 t. cinnamon
  • 1/2 t. cardamom
  • large pinch of salt
  • 2 T. white vinegar
  • 2/3 c. beef broth

Instructions

  1. Press the saute button on the Instant Pot and add the olive oil. When the gauge reads hot, add the beef and sear until nicely browned. Remove to a plate and set aside.
  2. Add the onions and garlic. Cook stirring, until the onion starts to soften. Add the allspice, pepper, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom and salt to the pot and stir to combine.
  3. Add the vinegar and cook, scraping up any browned bits stuck to the bottom of the insert.
  4. Return the meat to the pot. Add the broth and stir to combine. Turn off the Instant Pot.
  5. Place the lid onto the Instant Pot, sealing with the venting lid closed. Press Manual and set the Instant Pot to high pressure for 10 minutes.
  6. When the cooking is complete, use the quick release method to release any pressure. Unlatch the lid and remove the beef using tongs.
  7. Serve over hummus if desired.
