I just happened to be vacationing in Greece during this World Wine Travel event, in which Camilla of Culinary Cam invited us to explore up-and-coming wine regions. I was not too familiar with Greek wines, but I did know that Santorini is the most popular wine region. I decided to explore Greek Wines outside of Santorini.
After a long flight, with the last leg delayed and us sitting on the plane at the gate for over 2 hours, we finally checked into our hotel, the Adia Aluma. As soon as we got to the room, I called room service and asked for a wine recommendation, asking for a dry, crisp white wine.
They recommended this bottle of Viognier Eclectique, a premium white wine from Domaine Skouras in Greece's Peloponnese. This wine is classified under the PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) Peloponnese designation.
Having never heard of the Peloponnese designation, I ordered it. What a lovely bottle of wine. Bright and acidic, it was a lovely wine to relax with after such a long couple of days.
I did a Google search on Peloponnese wines and learned that it is a peninsula considered one of Europe's most exciting up-and-coming wine destinations. I can see why. Domaine Skouras, located in the northeastern Peloponnese, deserves the critical acclaim and attention it has been receiving.
On our second night in Athens, we went to Enastron, a traditional Greek Tavern recommended to us by our niece, Jennifer's cousin, Lisa. I ordered the lamb in parchment and paired it with a Red blend by Domaine Michaelidi. It was a smooth, silky blend that paired very well. I don't know much about Greek wines or whether this is an up-and-coming area, but I can attest to how lovely it was and how well it paired with the stewed lamb.
On our first night in Mykonos, we enjoyed a glass of rosé wine while watching the sunset from the patio of our villa. I couldn't find any English words on the label, so I cannot tell you anything about this wine other than it was crisp, acidic, and bright. A perfect ending to a perfect day.
I am sure there will be many more wines to taste and enjoy during the remaining week in Mykonos, but this gives you a taste of red, white, and rosé available in Greece that were not produced in Santorini.
Stop by and take a look at the other up-and-coming regions being featured this month.......
