Tender Crepes filled with store-bought hot fudge sauce, topped with ice cream and drizzled with additional hot fudge. An easy and impressive dessert.
This novel is the 16th in the Chief Inspector Gamache series that I have been reading. Unlike the other books in the series, this book is not set in the quaint little town of Three Pines but in Paris where Chief Inspector Gamache and his wife are visiting their children who have relocated.
Chief Inspector Gamache spent much of his childhood in Paris after his parents were killed in a car crash. He was raised by his Jewish grandmother with assistance from his Godfather, Steven, who is German but worked for the resistance during Hitler's reign.
Steven is in his 90's now but still very active and sharp-witted. The entire family, including Steven, meets for dinner one evening. As they leave the restaurant a vehicle intentionally strikes Steven and flees the scene. Thus starts an investigation that leads to enormous secrets both past and present.
This novel delves more deeply into Gamache's tense relationship with his son, Daniel. Daniel, inexplicably, went from a happy, care-free child to an angry, detached 11-year-old. This book explores the reasons why this happened. In one scene, Gamache and Daniel are walking and talking, they stop at a creperie and Gamache buys Daniel a chocolate-filled crepe as he often did when Daniel was young. The talk becomes heated and Daniel throws the crepe at his father.
Yesterday, on Candlemas, I shared a savory Roasted Vegetable Crepe recipe with you. They were part of a dinner of crepes that ended with these Dark Chocolate Crepes that I topped with Ice Cream. I used store-bought Hot Fudge Sauce and Ice Cream. My recipe for crepes can be found here.
