March is National Mulled Wine Month. I would have expected this delicious, aromatic delight to be celebrated in the dead of winter, perhaps January or February, but it is a delightful way to welcome in Spring while the chill remains in the air.
In France, Mulled Wine is Vin Chaud, and since it is time for the French Winophiles to gather, I asked the others to join me in celebration. Cheers.......

Perhaps we received it as a gift. I opened the bottle, swirled, and tasted. It was fruit-forward and light, perfect for Vin Chaud.
I heated the wine with brown sugar, spices, and citrus slices on the stovetop, then transferred it to my slow cooker to keep warm for a party I was hosting for our choir members.
Some of the other members of this group who joined in this event went non-traditional, using a Rosé wine. I'm anxious to see what they thought. Please join me. You will find links to their post at the beginning of this article.

Vin Chaud
French wine, spiced and sweetened, served warm for a delightful, comforting treat.
Ingredients
- 1 bottle of a young, light, and fruity French wine. I used a Pinot Noir.
- 1 each, orange and lemon, strips of zest removed for garnish, cut into thin slices
- 1/2 c. brown sugar
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 star anise
- pinch of nutmeg
Instructions
- Place the wine in a pot over medium heat.
- Stir in the brown sugar and spices. Add the citrus slices.
- Cook at a simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 20 minutes, being careful the wine does not come to a boil, until the sugar is dissolved and the spice flavors have infused into the wine.
- You can serve immediately or move to a slowcooker to stay warm until ready to serve.
