The Promise Girls by Marie Bostwick is the story of 3 sisters born to a mother with high aspirations she wanted to live out through them. She raised them as a single parent, writing a novel about how they had been conceived in test tubes using sperm from artistic geniuses, and that they were now, due to genetics and nurturing, budding artists and geniuses themselves.
I enjoyed this novel as an audible version. In the first chapter, the Promise Girls lives implode as the eldest, Joanie, defies her mother, who slaps her on live television, resulting in the girls being removed to the foster system.
The novel then continues, with all the sisters now adults learning to navigate the traumas of childhood. It is a story of family, love, and forgiveness. Much like the previous novel I read by this author, The Restoration of Celia Fairchild.
There was a lot of food mentioned in this novel, revolving around family life and neighborhood gatherings in Seattle, during the summertime.
The food that grabbed my attention was prepared by Hal, a producer who is making a documentary about what happened to the Promise Girls following that explosive interview that ended their budding careers. His specialty is Teriyaki Steak that he promises will bring tears to their eyes. That Teriyaki steak is being featured on my menu this week. Stay tuned for the recipe.
Tomorrow, our friend Sue is having an open house/potluck gathering since her eldest daughter, who lives in Tennessee, is in town. I am bringing a Tuna Macaroni Salad. On Sunday, I have a Bridal Shower to attend, so Frank will be in charge of dinner.
Monday, we are going to visit Sister Maryann and will take her out to lunch. We will also grab dinner out on the way home. Tuesday's menu will be quick and easy, as we will be packing up the camper and preparing to take the Angel Face and our Little Miss M to Jellystone Park in Frankenmuth. The rest of the week's menu will reflect that vacation. I will also include Breakfast and Lunch for Camping days so I don't forget to pack anything.
