Honduran Baleadas #EattheWorld

Baleadas is a traditional Honduran food consisting of thick flour tortillas smeared with refried beans, sprinkled with queso, then topped with avocado and a drizzle of sour cream.  It is folded and eaten by hand, making it a wonderful street food.

We are traveling to Honduras today as we Eat the World......

Eat the World

I am hosting this week, and I chose Honduras because, as these posts go live today, I am packing my bags to fly back home from a wonderful week in Roatan, Honduras.  Tomorrow, I will be sharing details of my trip, but today, let's take a look at the other Honduran recipes being shared.......

Tortillas

The main preparation for this delicious "sandwich" is the tortillas which are much thicker than the Mexican ones I am more familiar with.  These remind me of pita bread, but not quite as puffy and airy, more dense and softer in texture.

I served these for dinner a few nights before we left for our trip.  Frank made up some Strawberry Margaritas.  We were definitely getting Island ready.  I probably should have warned him I was taking a photo LOL.....

Menu

When we went for our first breakfast at the resort, the very first item on the menu was Honduran Baleada.  I guess we really had Brinner.  The Baleada that I had for breakfast used thinner tortillas and contained refried beans and a sharp, tangy cheese.

I prefer the recipe I am sharing which is made with thicker tortillas and milder cheese. I also love the addition of avocado and sour cream.

Honduran Baleadas

Baleadas is a traditional Honduran food consisting of thick flour tortillas smeared with refried beans, sprinkled with queso, then topped with avocado and a drizzle of sour cream. It is folded and eaten by hand, making it a wonderful street food.

Prep time: 15 MinCook time: 20 MinInactive time: 30 MinTotal time: 1 H & 5 M

Ingredients

  • 2-3 c. flour
  • 1 c. water
  • 1/2 c. vegetable oil
  • 1 egg
  • pinch of salt
  • 2 c. refried beans, warmed
  • 2 avocados, sliced
  • Queso Quesadilla or Queso Fresco
  • sour cream or crema fresca

Instructions

  1. Place two cups of the flour in the large bowl of a stand mixer, fitted with the dough hook. Add the water, egg, oil and salt. Mix until combined and then add flour, about 2 Tablespoons at a time, until the dough forms into a ball. Continue to knead until the dough is smooth and no longer sticky.
  2. Divide the dough into 10 equal pieces, roll into balls, cover and let rest for 20-30 minutes.
  3. Press each ball with the heel of your hand into a thick tortilla. Heat a large cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat and cook the tortillas, one at a time, on each until browned and lightly puffed.
  4. Spread some beans on top of the tortillas, sprinkle with cheese, add the avocado slices and drizzle with sour cream. Fold each in half and serve.
