Day 1- We left Sunday morning after Mass for our first RV adventure of the season. We headed west to Holland, on the shores of Lake Michigan, where we set up camp at the Holland State Park. As soon as we were set up, we headed back an hour to Kalamazoo to see our friend Sister MaryAnn. We picked up pizza on the way and had a short but lovely visit. We got back in time for the sunset.
A beautiful, scenic drive through Grand Haven and Muskegon to the Museum that was well worth the visit.
We first explored the indoor museum, which featured the history of WWII, local heroes who fought in the war, and the USS Silversides Submarine Boat.
Then we went out to the USS Silversides itself and toured the interior. I cannot imagine being in those confined quarters, with no sunlight or fresh air for a tour that normally spanned 52 days.
The final photo shows statistics on ships damaged and/or sunk by the USS Silversides during its deployments.
We headed back to Holland and had lunch at Boatwerks. We had planned to visit Windmill Island Gardens afterward, but a huge storm front came through, so we headed back to the trailer to wait it out.
The gardens are very popular at the beginning of May, when tulips are in bloom, and everywhere you look. The Tulip season is over, but the perennials and annuals were present, and the windmill was open for tours.
By the time we returned to the campsite, the sun was shining, and the temps were in the high 70's. We were grateful for the breeze. We relaxed with a cocktail, played a few rounds of Mexican Dominoes, and then opened a nice bottle of wine and grilled burgers for dinner. It was a very nice day.
Day 3- After our coffee, we went for one last walk along the beach, before having breakfast and breaking down the campsite to head home. It was a lovely getaway, and as always, I can't wait to get home.
