Blue Hawaii Cocktail #FoodnFlix

Sweet, tart, fruity and blue....this cocktail is the original Blue Hawaii first made in 1957 at the Kaiser Hawaiian Village in Honolulu.

Blue Hawaii Cocktail

There have been many replications of this original cocktail with the name changing to the Blue Hawaiian and the addition of Creme de Coconut.  This original cocktail is more like a Rum Punch than a Pina Colada.

I was inspired to make this cocktail after my friend Cam of Culinary Adventures with Camilla invited us to join her in watching movies set or filmed in Hawaii for this month's FoodnFlix Club.

Food 'n Flix

Food 'n Flix is a fun club where we take turns choosing movies to watch each month.  We all watch the movie on our own, create a dish inspired by the movie and share it on our blogs.  Then at the end of the month the host, in this case Cam, does a roundup of all of our recipes and movie reviews.  It is a lot of fun and any blogger can join by following the directions in the Guidelines.

Pearl Harbor (2001) - Rotten Tomatoes

Normally we all watch the same movie however this month was a little different.  COVID19 has affected every aspect of our lives, even this event.  You see, Cam son graduated this year and the family was supposed to travel to Hawaii in celebration.  Then the pandemic happened.  Cam decided if she couldn't take her son to Hawaii, she would bring Hawaii to her son. That's the kind of gal she is.

She invited us to join her in this virtual graduation celebration by watching any film we wanted as long as it was set or filmed in Hawaii.  That is a huge number of films from which to choose.

I decided on the 2001 film Pearl Harbor starring Ben Affleck, Cuba Gooding Jr, Kate Beckinsale and Alec Baldwin among others.  It is a fictional love story surrounded by the true life horrific attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941.

Our daughter Nicole was in high school when this film came out and we watched it at least 10 times after she got the DVD as a gift.  Nicole left that film behind so it is still in our collection.  I put it back in after all these years and watched it with my foodie glasses on.  Except that there isn't any food or at least not much food.  What there is is lots of bar scenes and cocktails of every sort.

man making cocktails

One day, after having watched the movie, we were getting ready to head out to the pool and relax.  Frank was dressed in his tropical bathing suit and asked what I would like to drink.  I asked him to make me this Blue Hawaii cocktail that I found on Liquor.com along with the information I shared with you about the cocktail in the beginning of the post.

This was a great poolside cocktail very refreshing and tasty.  I can't make one for Cam's son but I can make one for Cam and we can toast her son's graduation and continued success.

  1. Cheers, my friend. Yes, I'll take one! One could wish, right? Thanks for joining me. I don't think I've ever seen that movie. I will put it on my list.

  6. I like the idea of the margarita mix addition. Probably cuts the sweetness a bit of a traditional Blue Hawaiian.
