4 Ingredient, Small Batch, Nutella Muffins and a Book Review #MuffinMonday
4 Ingredients + 20 Minutes = 6 Scrumptious Muffins. This is an equation much like the one Charlie would imagine when given one of these muffins.
Who is Charlie? Read on.......
Before I answer that question, let me first talk to you about Muffin Monday. 1 brilliant administrator + 1 great idea + 5 avid bakers = 1 great monthly event that we call Muffin Monday.
We get together on the last Monday of each month to share Muffin recipes with our readers. This month I made these simple Nutella muffins and it made me think of the novel to which I am listening during my morning walks.
I will be telling you all about this novel but first let's take a look at what the others baked up for this month's event........
This is the second novel that I have listened to by auther, Kate Quinn. The first was the Rose Code and you can read my review and recipe inspired here. In that review I made a Roasted Quail dinner inspired by the dinner the protagonist had eaten with royalty.
There was no mention of Nutella muffins in The Alice Network, though there was tons of food and no shortage of inspiration. As you read on you will see why I am using this recipe to segue into my book review.
Charlie is an American of French descent who finds herself with a "little problem" at the end of World War II. This little problem came as a result of the war in which she lost family members, her brother to suicide after having lost a leg in the war and her cousin, her closest friend, who has disappeared and is presumed dead. Charlie, Charlotte to her very proper parents, is determined to feel something, anything beyond the numbing sadness and goes looking in all the wrong places.
Now she is in France, awaiting the second leg of the journey to Switzerland where her "little problem" will be resolved. Charlie has come to believe that her cousin, Rose, is still alive and sneaks out during the layover in search of her. She has a couple of clues, the name of a woman and the name of a restaurant where Rose last worked.
When Charlie finds the woman, Eve Gardner, she is met with a haggard, bitter, drunkard who has crippled hands and a cutting tongue. Something with Charlie resonates with Eve and she, along with her caretaker, Fin, accompany Charlie on the search for Rose........
I enjoy Quinn's novels very much. Her protagonists are strong and capable during a time when women are supposed to be meek and mild. Charlie is not interested, as her parents are, in finding herself a good husband and living the life of a well taken cared of housewife. Charlie is a math whiz and proud of it, much to her parent's dismay. Charlie thinks of life in a series of equations so when I was writing the title of this post for Muffin Monday, it made me think of her.
Charlie and her "little problem" would love these muffins made with Nutella, created right after WWII where this book was set. This recipe created brownie like muffins that are perfect for breakfast, snacks or dessert, perhaps warmed with a scoop of ice cream.....YUM!!
I will also be sharing this post over at Foodies Read. Stop by and see what the other foodies are reading this month.
I enjoy getting comments and feedback from my audience. Please let me know what you think, keeping in mind that we are all entitled to our own beliefs and opinions. I am happy to hear yours as long as they are stated nicely.
