O is for Oranges and a book review

We are working our way through the alphabet this year, one letter every other Wednesday, making a recipe that either starts with the letter or contains a main ingredient that begins with the letter.  This week's letter is O.

Family Reservations

I was reading Family Reservations by Liza Palmer.  A copy was included in my Kindle Unlimited App and as I was not currently reading anything, I downloaded it to take on my trip to Pennsylvania over the 4th of July weekend.

This novel follows the Winter family, mother, and 3 adult daughters, who own a Michelin Star restaurant and continue to expand.  The youngest daughter has taken over as Executive Chef and the mother is opening a new venue.  

In the first chapter or two, Chef gives a kitchen tour to a reporter and has her close her eyes as she gives her a slice of Cara Cara oranges.  Since I had used Cara Cara oranges in this recipe I decided to share the review of the book in this post.

I was unfamiliar with Cara Cara oranges, but Costco featured them, so I picked some up.  This recipe is adapted from a recipe also provided by Costco.  I was tickled that these oranges were also featured in this novel.

The Winter family is completely dysfunctional, having been raised by an egotistical narcissist.  The father is mentioned only in passing when the youngest daughter realizes she has never met him and the two older sisters don't remember him.

Each character is flawed but finds redemption during this book.  You are left with the feeling that, while life was never going to be perfect for this family, it would get much better.

A big deal was made of the fact that the Chef tweaked her mother's recipes and numerous times it was said that she had never made a recipe on her own.  I think that most of us would be hard put to create a completely new recipe that had not, in some way, been made before.  Tweaking or adapting the recipe is what makes it your own.  Just my opinion but pick up 5 cookbooks and compare 5 of the same recipes and you will see that the differences are very slight.  That does not make any one of those chefs less authentic than the other.

Orange Chili Pulled Pork

Orange Chili Pulled Pork

This pulled pork, seasoned with Cara Cara oranges and chili powder is made in a slow cooker, making it perfect for serving at your next gathering without heating up the house.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 c. chili powder
  • 1 T. ground cumin
  • 1 T. salt
  • 3-4 lb. pork shoulder roast
  • 1/4 c. tomato paste
  • Juice from 3 Oranges (I used Cara Cara)
  • 2 T. white vinegar
  • 4-5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 red onion, diced

Instructions

  1. Combine the chili powder, cumin, and salt. Rub all over the pork roast and place into a slow cooker along with any remaining spice mixture.
  2. Whisk together the orange juice, tomato paste, vinegar, and garlic. Pour over the roast. Add onion and cook, covered on low setting for 8 hours.
  3. Use 2 forks to shred the pork, discarding any bones and/or gristle. Serve on sandwiches or in taco shells.

  3. I just saw that today in the Costco connections mag before I recycled it, lol. We absolutely love the Cara Cara oranges and I love that you added cumin to this. The aroma must be fantastic! Om nom nom...

  6. Pulled pork is such an easy dish to make as it's mostly hands off time and yet, I rarely think to make it. I don't think I can find cara cara oranges right now so regular ones will have to do!
