Corndogs

The Sunday Funday Bloggers are sharing Foods on a Stick today......
Did you know that today is National Something on a Stick day?  Neither did I but luckily Mayuri of Mayuri's Jikoni did and invited the Sunday Funday Blogging group to join her in celebrating by serving up food on a stick.  Thanks Mayuri.

Corndog pin

I have to be honest with you.  I had never even eaten a corndog before I made them for this event.  The Teen loves them and gets them when the carnival comes to town each year.  I never even had a desire to try them.

But when Mayuri suggested this celebration for a National Holiday of which I had never heard, I considered the foods on a stick that were festive and thought of Corndogs.  I decided to make some and surprise the Teen.  She was thrilled she ate 3 at dinner and 2 more for lunch the following day.  Frank had a couple and I, finally, tried a corn dog.  It was better than I expected.  Would I choose them over the Italian Sausage on a bun that I normally get when the carnival comes?  Nope, but at least now it is an educated choice.

I can understand why Food on a Stick has a holiday after all who doesn't love Kebabs? I make kebabs all the time like these with Pork and Nectarines.  We also love City Chicken and have it quite often.

Foods on a stick are also great to celebrate other holidays like these Patriotic Fruit Skewers that are perfect for Memorial Day or Fourth of July or these Cake Pops that I made for my Mom on Mother's Day.

I hope you enjoy your holiday and that you find fun with Something on a Stick.  I think I might head over to the Angel Face and watch her play on her Pogo Stick!!

Homemade Corndogs

You don't have to wait for the carnival to come into town to enjoy this iconic treat. Hot dogs coated in cornbread and deep fried to golden perfection.
Prep time: 10 MinCook time: 3 MinTotal time: 13 Min

Ingredients

  • 8 Hot Dogs of choice
  • 1 c. cornmeal
  • 3/4 c. flour
  • 2 T. sugar
  • 1/2 T. baking powder
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 1/3 c. buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 T. olive oil
  • 1/2 T. honey
  • 8 sticks
  • oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Heat a dutch oven or large pot containing 2-3" of oil over medium high heat to a temperature of 350*. I used my deep fryer for convenience and accuracy.
  2. Insert sticks into hot dogs.
  3. Whisk together the corn meal, flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.
  4. In a deep glass or similar container, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, oil and honey. Stir in the dry ingredients until just combined.
  5. Holding the stick, put the hot dog straight down into the batter and swirl to cover. Keep turning the hot dogs as you remove the from the batter to release any excess batter.
  6. Place the hot dogs into the hot cooking oil, holding at an angle for a a few seconds to set the batter before dropping them in to cook for a few minutes, until golden brown and crisp.
  7. Remove to a paper towel lined plate and continue cooking 2 or 3 at a time until all corndogs are ready.
  8. Serve with Ketchup and Mustard.

  1. I'm like you, never had the desire to try one. The kids love them, and they love helping in the kitchen, especially Owen, so next time they come, we'll have to give these a try. ☺️

  3. An interesting recipe Wendy, have heard about corn dogs but never really bothered to find out how they are made. As for the National Holiday, totally related to US, comes up on my email as I must have once liked a site days of the year.
