Remembering D Day with the Normandy 44 Cocktail #Winophiles
On the 79th Anniversary of D Day this year, I was traveling to California to celebrate my great niece, Quinn's graduation from high school. Even though it is a week later, I did ask to host this month's French Winophiles event so that we could celebrate the Allied Invasion that began the liberation of France during World War II and spread to liberate all of the countries of the Western Front.
I wanted to host this month because Frank and I, along with 3 of our friends, are planning a trip to Normandy next spring.
I asked the others to join me this month in celebrating D Day by sharing the food and drink of Normandy. While there is not a lot of wines made from grapes available that are grown and made in Normandy but they do have wonderful apples from which they produce lovely brandies and hard ciders.
Let's see what the other's are sharing today......
Please join us on Saturday, June 17, during twitter chat at 11 AM ET when we are discussing these and other adventures in Normandy. You will find us by following #Winophiles.
We had made up some Normandy 44, a cocktail popular in Normandy to celebrate D Day. We had learned of this drink from Frank's sister Roz who brought back the recipe from a bar that she visited while in Normandy.
We invited our friends Bob, Cathy and Chet who are planning this trip with us over for dinner. It was a beautiful night and we gathered on the deck with Charcuterie and cocktails as Cathy shared what she had learned about the hotels, tours and travel available to us. We will fly into Paris where we will enjoy the sights for 3 days before heading to Normandy where we will do the Band of Brothers tour.
This will be followed by visits to Berlin where we will make stops including Checkpoint Charlie and then head to Krakow and a tour of Auschwitz.
We will leave Krakow and fly to London to see the sights before returning to Paris and our flight home.
This discussion was followed by dinner. Grilled Halibut Packets, Grilled Potato Planks, Macaroni Salad, Cole Slaw, and Fruit Salad paired with a White Bordeaux.
The finale was a Tarte Normande that I served with the Normandy 44 cocktail that I am sharing with you today. This Tarte was absolutely amazing too so stay tuned for that recipe.
This is my first trip to Europe and I am beyond excited. We will be having several other meetings and planning sessions that I will be sharing with you.
See you Saturday!!!

Normandy 44 Cocktail
This recipe was given to my sister in law when she visited a bar in Normandy, France. The bartender served her this drink and told her that it was common to toast all the allied armed forces that fought to liberate the Western Front starting with the storming of Normandy Beach.
Ingredients
1 fifth Calvados
44 sugar cubes
44 coffee beans
Instructions
Combine the Calvados, sugar cubes and coffee beans into a sealed glass container.
Place the container in a cool, dark area for 44 days, shaking the container every day or so to blend.
After 44 days, strain the Calvados back into the original bottle.
I enjoy getting comments and feedback from my audience. Please let me know what you think, keeping in mind that we are all entitled to our own beliefs and opinions. I am happy to hear yours as long as they are stated nicely.
I can't wait to see your dessert recipe! Looks delicious
