This meal was inspired by the film Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.........
My children were just the right age when the first Star Wars Trilogy came out. My son, Chuck, was especially enthralled and his room was filled with figures and models of the starships and characters.
Their dad was a huge fan as well and also loved Star Trek and all other forms of Science Fiction. Me? Not so much. I willingly went to the theater for all three of the first round of movies. I admit that I had a crush on Han Solo however I loved Harrison Ford much more in the Indiana Jones movies which was much more my genre of film.
I loved picking out the gifts for Chuck for his birthday and Christmas and seeing the excitement on his face. I did not love the movies, at most I was tepid about them. When the second trilogy came out I had no desire to see them and my daughter, Amy, confirmed that I would not care for them.
When the third trilogy released, Amy mentioned that I may enjoy return of the Jedi as many of the original characters were included in this film. I did not go see it nor was I ever tempted to watch it at home.
When Kelly of Simply Inspired Meals chose the Star Wars franchise for our Food n Flix viewing this month I decided to take a shot at Return of the Jedi. You can learn more at Kelly's invitation post.
I know that it is late in the month but I also know that there are tons of huge Star Wars fans out there, many of whom have blogged recipes inspired by them. If you are one of these bloggers and want to join in the fun you can learn how at the Food n Flix Guidelines.
So on a recent flight to California, I began watching Return of the Jedi. I watched as a new protagonist fought off the enemy under the guidance of Princess Leia. I watched as a new female Jedi, sought out Luke Skywalker who is living on a deserted island or planet or something with Chewbacca, who I have always loved.
I watched Luke catch a huge fish and drink some green milk from an alien cow. I watched as Chewie cooked up some adorable little birds as all of it's relatives watched on in sadness and horror. These were cute, little fuzzy birds with huge eyes.
And then, I fell asleep. I'm sorry....I guess that Star Wars just doesn't hold my interest enough. I know that is astounding to all of you Star Wars fans out there but to put it in perspective....When Harry met Sally....is one of my favorite films LOL.
At least, I got some food inspiration before I crashed. I was going to make catfish which is what the huge monstrosity speared by Luke reminded me of. However, if you take a look at my FoodnFlix post from June for which I made a wonderful seared duck breast dinner, you will learn that in my quest to find duck breast I also ended up with some quail.
I have never had quail prior to this meal but when I saw those cute little birds in the movie, I immediately remembered I had quail in the freezer. Now, granted, quail do not have those huge, sad eyes but they are small and cute so here is my inspiration from this film.
How does quail taste? The legs reminded me of eating frog legs, much the same in texture and taste. I love frog legs so this made me happy. The breast meat reminded me a bit of goose which I prepared once and wasn't crazy about. However, just like the movie, there are many out there that love goose and quail. I, on the other hand, can take it or leave it, just like the Star Wars movies.

I don't think we can be friends anymore, Wendy!! Not a fan of Star Wars and not a fan of quail!! LOL. Just kidding. You know I love you. Well, we do love quail, and I've never done a glazed quail. On my list now.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was okay but not something I will go out of my way to make, especially at the steep price. I'm glad we can still be friends.
DeleteBummer that Star Wars isn't your thing...but still a fun and tasty looking recipe inspired by it! I find quail entirely irresistible.
ReplyDeleteThanks Heather. One of the things I like about this club is that it pulls me out of my rut every once in a while.
DeleteHahaha! What a brilliant take on the Porgs! Wish I would've thought of it! As much as I love Star Wars (original trilogy), I wasn't a huge Return of the Jedi fan, so I didn't even consider it! Love your recipe!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, I was glad that I could join in this month
DeleteI'm with you on the Star Wars series after the first three. At least you got a good nap! I've never been able to sleep on a plane!
ReplyDeleteWell our flight was at 7 am so we had been up since 3 am. That helped LOL
DeleteI like Star Wars, but not a massive fan like a lot of people! I don't actually think I've ever had quail (only quail eggs).
ReplyDeleteI've never had quail eggs either Amy....I live under a rock LOL
DeleteI am terrible about falling asleep during movies as well. I've taken to buying the videos so I can do them in sections or repeats. As for the quail, I do love it- but the bones are peculiar and small. It's great that they cook really fast though.
ReplyDeleteYes, but I don't think that negates the price LOL.
DeleteMy parents have some quail, so I am going to suggest this to my mom. They look fabulous!
ReplyDeleteThanks Carlee.
DeleteFell asleep during Star Wars and eating something inspired by porgs? Oh man... I'll let it go this time! I've actually never had quail.
ReplyDeleteVery adventurous! And I am a fan of the original trilogy, but that's where it ends for me :)
ReplyDeleteUnderstandable Jolene.
DeleteWe are HUGE Star Wars fans and have enjoyed them through the years. I love making inspired dishes.

DeleteI am not a fan of Star Wars either haha but We do like quail
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy this version Angie.
DeleteWould you believe it if I told you I have never seen a single Star Wars movie! And, I have been around for a long time!!! I do however know several people who would love this recipe :)
ReplyDeleteWell there are a lot of Star War fans out there Maureen but I don't think you are missing anything.
DeleteMy mother used to make quail - I haven't had it in a long time, this looks good!
