It is peach season here in Michigan and I couldn't be more excited.......
The folks over at Nielsen-Massey contacted me a short while ago and offered to send me a bottle of their Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract. All they asked for in return is for me to play in the kitchen. Since that is one of my favorite past times, I jumped at the opportunity.
I must admit, I had no idea what Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla was. I mean, I could infer that it came from Madagascar but I also could infer that it was infused with bourbon.
A quick google search turned up the following information from Wikepedia.
"Bourbon vanilla is named for the period when the island of Réunion was ruled by the Bourbon kings of France; it does not contain Bourbon whiskey. Natural vanilla flavoring is derived from real vanilla beans with little to no alcohol. The maximum amount of alcohol that is usually present is only 2–3%."
The Nielsen-Massey website for this wonderful product says:
"Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract is produced from premium, hand-selected beans cultivated in Madagascar, the world’s leading supplier of the highest quality vanilla. Our proprietary cold extraction process gently draws out and preserves the vanilla’s more than 250 flavor compounds, resulting in a flavor profile that’s full, sweet, creamy and mellow with velvety after-tones. Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract is the perfect all-purpose vanilla"I have to admit that I was pretty stoked to have gotten a free sample of a product that is considered the worlds "most popular". I can't believe I hadn't heard of it prior to this.
The vanilla arrived by UPS on the same day that Frank stopped at the Fruit Orchards and brought home a peck of fresh Michigan peaches. You know how excited I get each year when the peaches are ready.
I preserve much of them to enjoy year long by making salsa and jam. I can them in slices and I also spice them and sweeten them with honey before canning. We joyfully eat them over the sink while the juices run down our chins. I use them in a plethora of baked goods and drinks. I have made soup, cut them up in salads, added them to jello and thrown them on the grill.
You would think that I would run out of new recipes to share. That, fortunately is not the case. I knew when I got both of these great items on the same day that providence was smiling down upon me.
I decided to make Marissa, her friend, Ainsley, and the Angel Face peach smoothies for breakfast. I used fresh peaches, light cream, a splash of the Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla and pureed it all up with some ice. They loved it. I had a sip and I loved it too.
Of course, my mind immediately focused on the fact that this would make a lovely poolside cocktail on these humid, sultry nights we have been
I have to confess that I really didn't think that the vanilla used would make that much of a difference so when I made peach milkshakes for the kids to have while we enjoyed our cocktails, I used a different pure vanilla extract. The milkshakes were still delicious but lacked the depth of flavor and delicious after tones of the Madagascar Vanilla. I am sold and since I know that Nielsen-Massey brands are always made with the utmost care, I will continue to purchase this product from them when I run out. I don't think that is going to take very long. Baking season is fast approaching.
