Chicken Tikka Masala inspired by The Hundred Foot Journey and the Weekly Menu #MoviesandMunchies

I made this Chicken Tikka Masala in a slow cooker and it turned out incredibly tender and flavorful with very little effort.

Chicken Tikka Masala

I was inspired to make this dish after watching (again) The Hundred Foot Journey.....

Movies and Munchies Logo

I had watched The Hundred Foot Journey before when our group belonged to Food n Flix back in 2015 when I was also reading the book for our Cook the Books Club.  Camilla of Culinary Cam chose the movie and hosted back then.

The administrator of Food n Flix decided to take a sabbatical and, with her blessings, some of us decided to carry on with the theme of enjoying a movie a month and sharing a dish inspired by it.  This month, Cam is hosting and asked us to revisit this great foodie film.

The Hundred Foot Journey

I was happy to rewatch this film.  It is one that I could watch over and over again.  It is also a film that no matter how many times I watch it I will be inspired into the kitchen and could probably make 50 different recipes.
Beef Bordeaux

The first time I watched it I was inspired to make an Indian Spiced Beef Bordeaux.  You can read all about that and read both my movie and book review in the link for the recipe.

This time I was inspired by a scene at the beginning of the movie when Hassan and his family uncover a large cooking vessel that "is perfect for Chicken Masala".

I just got home from our Hawaii/California vacation.  We had a great time and I will be sharing our adventures soon but today........Laundry, Menu Planning and Grocery Shopping is on the list.

Let's start with our Weekly Menu Plan followed by this wonderful slow cooker recipe.

Slow Cooker Chicken Tikka Masala

Slow Cooker Chicken Tikka Masala

I made this Chicken Tikka Masala in a slow cooker and it turned out incredibly tender and flavorful with very little effort.
Prep time: 10 MinCook time: 4 HourTotal time: 4 H & 10 M

Ingredients

  • 8-10 boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2-3 T. canola oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced
  • 2 T. tomato paste
  • 1 T. garam masala
  • 1/2 t. smoked paprika
  • 1/2 t. turmeric
  • dash of cumin
  • 1 t. sugar
  • 1 T. ginger paste
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 c. chicken broth
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 3/4 c. plain yogurt
  • Steamed rice for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat a glug of oil in a large skillet over med high heat. Season the chicken with salt and pepper and sear on each side until browned. Transfer to a cutting board and cut into bite size pieces. Set aside.
  2. In same skillet, adding more oil if necessary, cook the onion and jalapeno with the tomato paste, garam masala, turmeric, cumin and sugar for a few minutes until onion is softened and lightly browned.
  3. Stir in the garlic and ginger and then add the chicken broth and cook, scraping up any browned bits on the bottom of the pan.
  4. Transfer to the crock of a slow cooker. Add the chicken and tomato sauce, stirring to combine.
  5. Cover and cook on low for 3-4 hrs. Before serving, remove a 1/2 c. of the sauce from the slow cooker and whisk it into the yogurt. Stir this mixture back into the slow cooker and serve over steamed rice, if desired.

  2. I almost totally forgot about this event; hence the "food in the freezer" post. Glad Cam reminded me! Loved both your dishes (2015 and present) for this film!
