Gnudi inspired by Murder in Siena paired with a Merlot Wine #MerlotMe

Gnudi is a cousin of Gnocchi, made using ricotta cheese instead of potatoes.  It is light, fluffy and delicious.  It is similar to the filling you might find in ravioli but without the wrapper.

I was inspired to make this dish after reading Murder in Siena by T.A. Williams.......

This is the 4th book in the series that follows a retired police lieutenant Dan Armstrong and his canine partner, Oscar.  You can read my reviews of the other 3 and the recipes inspired; Spring Vegetable Soup, Bistecca alla Fiorentina, and a Triple Aged Cheddar Cheeseburger.

Murder in Siena

In this 4th novel, Dan's PI business is booming and he has just had his first mystery novel published. He and his new love, Anna, join his friend Virgilio and his wife on holiday in Siena.  They stay at a hotel that is hosting a conference of scientists, and of course, there is a murder, or in this case several murders.

They do find some time for relaxation and sightseeing, however, and in the first restaurant they visit they are brought a large platter of gnudi to share with the table.  This inspired me to make some gnudi to share with you.

Merlot Wine

I decided to open this bottle of Goldschmidt Merlot named after the owner's daughter, Chelsea, to serve with this dinner.  It was perfect.  I have enjoyed Goldschmidt Merlot in the past serving it with Spaghetti with Meat Sauce the first time I tried it and with Braised Chicken with Apples the next.

Each pairing was wonderful and this family-run vineyard in Sonoma offers an excellent selection of wines.  This bottle of Chelsea has a SRP of $25 and is the perfect choice if you are looking for a bottle to give as a hostess gift over the holidays.

Gnudi

Gnudi

Gnudi is a cousin of Gnocchi, made using ricotta cheese instead of potatoes. It is light, fluffy and delicious. It is similar to the filling you might find in ravioli but without the wrapper.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 (15 oz) container Ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 c. flour, divided
  • shredded parmesan for garnish, if desired.

Instructions

  1. Combine the ricotta, grated parmesan cheese and egg in a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper.
  2. Stir in 1/2 c. of the flour. Sift 1/4 c. of flour onto a rimmed baking sheet.
  3. Using a small cookie scoop, scoop out balls of the ricotta mixture onto the sifted flour until all the dough is used. Sift the remaining flour over the gnudi and place in the refrigerator for 20 minutes.
  4. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the gnudi, one at a time and cook until they rise to the top, about 4-5 minutes. Remove to a serving bowl and top with desired sauce. A butter sauce is traditional. I used marinara for this recipe.
  5. Garnish with shredded Parmesan cheese, if desired.

  1. Gnudi is totally new to me but it looks really delicious. Together with a glass of Merlot (one of my favorites) it's a perfect meal.!!

  2. Gnudi, sounds a bit risqué but delicious. I'm going to give them a try.
    Unfortunately our library doesn't carry T.A. Williams' books.

    1. I get them through my kindle unlimited. No costs other than the monthly fee for belonging. They offer a lot of books that my library does not have.
