M is also for Magical, Mystical, Mystery which describes the book I just finished reading. This book is the 3rd in in Whimbrel House Series. The fourth and final book is slated for release in Spring of 2025, so you have plenty of time to read these 3 if you enjoy this type of book.
In the first book, Keeper of Enchanted Rooms, we meet Merritt Fernsby, who finds himself trapped in a haunted house that he inherited from his grandmother. He hires Hulda Larkin to exorcise the 12-year-old boy, Merritt's great-great uncle, who has been trapped in the walls of the house since his death many years ago.
The following year I enjoyed, Heir of Uncertain Magic, which follows Merritt and Hulda as they fall in love and the uncle, Owein, as he is released from the house and now inhabits the body of a dog.
I enjoyed this book just as much as the first 2 and look forward to reading the final book in the series next year. In this third book of the series, that is set in the 1800's, Merritt, Hulda and Owein travel to England at the behest of the Queen who is trying to keep the magical line strong in her family.
The Queen has offered the services of her personal Necromancer, to place Owein's spirit into a human body in return for his promise to marry her young relative to create children that would share both of their magical talents.
Owein is treated like royalty while in England, being served multi-course meals in silver bowls. He enjoys many delicious dishes, one of which is pork.
This dish was not part of a multi-course meal. It was just a casual, comfortable family dinner that Owein would have approved.

Pork Chops in Creamy Mushroom Sauce
Ingredients
- 4 pork chops
- salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 T. olive oil
- 1/2 Vidalia onion, sliced
- 8 oz. sliced white mushrooms
- 1/2 c. dry white wine
- 1/3 c. light cream
Instructions
- Season the pork chops with salt and pepper. Heat 1 Tablespoon of the oil in a large skillet over med-high heat and sear the pork chops on both sides. Reduce heat to medium and cook another 2-3 minutes per side until an internal temperature of 145-150* is reached. Remove to a plate and set aside, keeping warm.
- Heat the remaining oil in the same skillet, add the mushrooms and onions and cook, stirring frequently until onions are softened and mushrooms are browned.
- Add the wine and cook, stirring and scraping up any browned bits stuck to the bottom of the pan until the wine is reduced by half or more. Stir in the cream and cook for another minute.
- Ladle the mushroom sauce over the pork chops and serve.

Mmmm, how can you say no to creamy mushroom sauce!
ReplyDeleteI certainly can't.
DeleteYou know, one of the comfort foods I grew up on was a meatball stew that my mom made with carrots, green beans, meatballs and canned beefy mushroom soup. I don't think they even make that anymore and homemade is so much better anyway. I am super tempted to whip up some meatballs and veggies with this sauce and recreate that dish! With mash on the side, oh my yum.
DeleteAny meat protein with a creamy mushroom gravy would be delicious but I especially love that you chose pork chops, Wendy! Divine!
ReplyDeleteThanks Stacy.
DeleteThose look so moist and succulent! Marvelous!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Karen
DeleteNow that my mushroom-averse child is back at school, I can cook with mushrooms. I will give this a try soon.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy Camilla.
DeleteWendy I really wouldn't mind using this creamy mushroom sauce for my pasta. Like also how you've recommended books to read. I can never choose one in a bookstore as I get too overwhelmed. I buy what is recommended by friends and family.
ReplyDeleteThis is a fun series if you like magical stories.
DeleteI love chops and with mushrooms look so yum!
ReplyDeleteThank you Sneha.
DeleteSounds like a great read and a great meal to go with it!
ReplyDeleteThanks Jolene. I enjoyed both
DeleteOh yeah, I'm pretty much your gal for anything with a mushroom sauce. Perhaps I'll sub in some other alcohol for the white wine though...since we never seem to have that in our house. Pehaps some sweet tea vodka?
ReplyDeleteWell that might be delicious
DeleteCreamy mushroom sauce sounds inviting and this is an amazing meal as well as a great recipe choice for the letter 'M'
ReplyDeleteThanks Radha.
