Celebrating the 2nd Day of Christmas with a Warm Cocktail and the Weekly Menu leading up to the New Year #MoviesandMunchies

This warm, spiced cocktail is a classic Holiday drink that dates back to the Colonial days.  There are many different versions of this cocktail but all contain rum, butter, and spices.

Hot Buttered Rum

The type of rum can vary but I prefer using spiced rum.  Some recipes use hot water, as mine does, others use hot cider.
I served Hot Buttered Rum as the signature cocktail at our Choir Christmas Party last Friday night.  I made up a log of the spiced butter and put into the refrigerator to harden.  I did take a photo of this but, honestly, it looks like a dog turd. I decided to spare you that image and share a double image of the drink LOL.

When Frank was bartending he simply cut off a slice of the butter log and mixed it with the rum and hot water.

I decided to make this the signature cocktail of the evening while watching the Christmas Musical, White Christmas starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera Ellen.  The 4 of them are traveling in a club car on a train talking about going to Vermont.  Bing Crosby's character says Vermont and snow might be nice this time of year.  That you could enjoy a Hot Buttered Rum, light on the Butter.  The quartet then breaks into the song SNOW.

White Christmas

My Movies and Munchies group is being hosted by Debra of Eliot's Eats this month and she invited us to watch any or many holiday movies and share a recipe inspired by one or all of them.

There are several movies that we watch each Christmas season and 3 of them are must sees.  These are A Wonderful Life with Jimmy Stewart, A Miracle on 34th Street with Natalie Wood, and White Christmas with Bing Crosby.

I shared a review of this movie on the blog back in 2019 for our now defunct FoodnFlix group.  Some of the members of that group weren't ready to stop watching, cooking and sharing so we spun off onto our own with Movies and Munchies.

Last time I shared a Turkey and Cranberry Pannini that would be a very nice complement to this cocktail.  You will find the recipe for our version of Hot Buttered Rum below our Weekly Menu  featuring Leftovers this week.

  1. I am still laughing at your dog turd comment! I guess I've never made hot buttered rum. How is that possible? I'm going to mix up some of that compound butter now. I really had no idea that was a thing in this cocktail! Thank you and hope your holidays were merry and bright!
