Welcome to Italian Food Wine Travel........

Earlier this month, Cam was hosting our Movies and Munchies group and had chosen the film, Letters to Juliet. This film is set in Verona, Italy birthplace of Valpolicella wine which happened to be my destination and topic for our Italian Food Wine and Travel group chat scheduled for this Saturday, October 1st.
I poured my wine for this event when I served the dinner inspired by the film. You can read my review of the movie and get the recipe for this One Pot Mushroom Spaghetti in my Movies and Munchies Post.
When I was preparing the dinner, outside on my grill's side burner the following day, I was thinking about the film and decided to open the bottle of Valpolicella I had purchased for this event. I thought about how wine speaks of love and how love comes in so many different forms.
It is poured in celebrations with family and friends, during holidays or just family dinner. It is poured when visiting in restaurants. It is poured when two people are sitting quietly on a date getting to know each other and it is poured as the relationship continues to grow and mature much as the grapes for the wine. And if that relationship ends in marriage it continues to age and get better with time, much as a bottle of fine wine.
The wine I purchased is called Le Calendre, an appropriate name when thinking about time and about love and wine. Here is what the winery has to say about their name......
In the Veronese peasant tradition, "making calendre" was a custom to predict the climate in the coming seasons, and to plan the work in the fields accordingly. There was no scientific basis, but only centuries of traditions and customs. We keep this teaching in our way of interpreting wine and vineyard: science is not enough, nor what is learned from books, to explain the magic contained in a glass of good wine.
I agree that the magic and love found in a glass of wine is interpreted by each person's individual palate and personality. My palate enjoys smooth, dry, medium bodied wines. This bottle of 2017 Valpolicella met that profile perfectly.
Wine doesn't have to be expensive or haughty to be wonderful. Nor does love and romance have to be fancy dinners and roses. Sometimes, it is one pot spaghetti eaten out on the deck as you toast your husband for all his hard work.
If there is anything that says love more than your husband of over 30 years, who has been on deaths door 3 times in the past 2 years, working tirelessly from the minute he gets up in the morning until he falls asleep at night to give you the kitchen of your dreams.....I don't know what it would be.

Verona is definitely one of my favorite Italian cities. In fact, I prefer it to Venice which Jake still hasn't forgiven me for skipping that stop on the trip. I sent my family ahead because I wanted one night to myself - out of three weeks! - and he missed Venice.

DeleteI'm such a fan of that movie and enjoying watching it when I miss my visits to Italy. I've based myself out of Verona a couple times now. A great city and even better wines!
