Caprese Burgers #FarmersMarketWeek

Farm fresh mixture of grass fed beef and bulk Italian Sausage, formed into a patty, grilled to perfection and placed on a toasted bun that has been spread with homemade basil pesto.  Top with freshly picked tomato, fresh mozzarella cheese and a sprinkling of additional basil.  This is a burger that will haunt your memory until you make it again.

Tuesday’s Farmer’s Market Week Recipes

What makes this burger so special is the inclusion of pesto not only spread on the bun but also incorporated into the patty itself.  You can buy pesto if you want but basil is overflowing at the farmer's markets right now and it is so easy to make you should absolutely grab a few bunches and follow my easy peasy directions.  I guarantee you will never go back to the stuff sold in jars at the store.

You can make huge batches and freeze the leftovers in ice cube trays to be used all year long in sauces, soups and stews.  You will be surprised how much flavor a cube put into a bowl of soup adds amazing flavor that makes you feel like you are in the midst of summer again.


Because of the pork sausage, you want to make sure your burgers are cooked to an internal temperature of 165*.  Once they reach 165* add the cheese, let it melt and remove them from the grill to rest.  While the burgers rest, toast your buns, spread with pesto,  top with a tomato slice and then add the burger on top.


These burgers are sure to become a summertime favorite when the tomatoes and basil are abundant.  My mouth is watering just writing this post.  Time to make another batch.......

Top with freshly picked tomato, fresh mozzarella cheese and a sprinkling of additional basil. This is a burger that will haunt your memory until you make it again.

ingredients:

  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1 lb. bulk Italian sausage
  • 3/4 c.basil pesto, divided
  • 6 slices fresh Mozzarella
  • 6 hamburger buns
  • 6 slices ripe tomato
  • Fresh Basil leaves, cut in chiffonade

instructions:

How to cook Caprese Burgers

  1. Combine the beef, Italian Sausage and 1/2 c. pesto.  Divide into 6 equal portions and form into patties. 
  2. Grill patties, covered over med high heat until internal temperature reaches 160*, about 6 minutes per side.  Add a slice of cheese to each patty, cover again and grill until cheese melts.  Remove from grill, cover lightly with foil and allow to rest.
  3. Place the buns, cut side down on the hot grill.  Cook until toasted, about 1 minute.  Remove from grill and spread the bottom buns with the remaining 1/4 c. pesto.  Top with a slice of tomato and then the burger.  Sprinkle with fresh basil and serve.
