Beer Braised Hot Dogs and Sauerkraut #HotDogDay

Hot Dogs braised in Dark Beer until they are nice and plump, then cooked on the grill until browned and caramelized topped with Sauerkraut that has been lightly sweetened with brown sugar and braised in a fruity beer.....

Join us as we celebrate National #HotDogDay!!

Our friend, Christie of A Kitchen Hoor's Adventures, invited our Festive Foodies group to celebrate National Hot Dog Day.

I'm all about hot dogs, especially in the Good Ol' Summertime.  Nothing is easier than throwing dogs on the grill when you would rather be playing outside than cooking.  They are great for eating outside too.  Heck you don't even need a plate!

But you can elevate that plain old dog into a masterpiece too.  I have made homemade Coney Sauce  when feeding a crowd.  I have made Mummy Dogs to celebrate Halloween. I have wrapped them in Pretzel Dough, Crescent Rolls and cut them up for Nachos.

So when faced with this event, I wanted to share something different.  I found a recipe from Bon Appetit, way back from July of 2009, and knew it would be perfect.

I adapted the recipe slightly using a Bock beer instead of Porter and a Cherry Wheat Beer instead of the Raspberry Lambic.  Other than that it's the same because, realistically how else can you change it LOL.

Start off by braising some refrigerated sauerkraut in the Cherry Beer.  Add some brown sugar to tone down the sourness a bit.

Then braise the dogs in beer until they are nice and plump.

Then it is just a matter of grilling the dogs for about 3 or 4 minutes.  Just long enough for them to have nice grill marks and be caramelized.  YUMMO!!

Let's take a look at what the others are sharing for National Hot Dog Day...…
And here is my recipe...….

Hot Dogs braised in Dark Beer until they are nice and plump, then cooked on the grill until browned and caramelized topped with Sauerkraut that has been lightly sweetened with brown sugar and braised in a fruity beer.....

ingredients:

8 Hot Dogs
8 Hot Dog Buns
1 pkg. refrigerated sauerkraut
1 bottle or can of Dark Beer, I used Shiner Bock
1 bottle of can of Fruity Beer, I used Cherry Wheat
1/3 c. brown sugar

instructions:

Place the sauerkraut, dark beer and brown sugar into a medium pot.  Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover and braise for about 10 minutes or until the hotdogs are done.

Place the hot dogs in a skillet with the fruity beer, bring to a boil, reduce heat and cook until hot dogs plump up.  About 5-7 minutes.  Remove the hot dogs from the beer and place on a hot grill. Cook until grill marks appear and the hot dogs caramelize.

Place onto buns and top with the beer braised sauerkraut.

  1. Hot dogs this way are definitely MY favorite. Love the sauerkraut, especially. But, then again, you know me and pickles.
