Peanut Butter filled Steamed Buns for #FoodieExtravaganza

My mind swirled around all the possibilities.....all the sweets and confections I love that have peanut butter in them.  All the spicy Thai foods in their peanutty goodness that everyone loves.  I figured everyone would be having the same thoughts and ideas as I in regards to peanut butter and really preferred to do something outside the box.  So I jumped from peanut butter fudge to Thai pizza to my final choice of Chinese Steamed Buns.  You can fill Steamed Buns with anything so why not peanut butter?  Yes, why not!!

Product Details

I took my recipe for the Dough for Steamed Buns (Bau Min Teun) from this cookbook by Eileen Yin-Fei Lo. I used the dough hook on my Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer but all ingredients are the same except I used coconut oil in place of the lard.  We enjoyed them for breakfast one morning with a dipping sauce that I made from some homemade jam my niece, Jen, had made.  I would have preferred my sauce a little spicier but Frank is spice sensitive so it was made to his liking.  Feel free to add as much spice as you and your family like.


The dough contains no yeast but the recipe still has you let it stand for an hour before continuing.


I used a cookie scoop to measure the peanut butter.

Placed them in a steamer lined with parchment paper and let them steam for 20 minutes.
The recipe was supposed to make 16.  I got a dozen from my batch.


When done steaming I glazed them with the spicy jam sauce and served extra for dipping.


They were very tasty but beware...you are going to need a big glass of milk with these.
They are stick to your mouth delicious!!



Peanut Butter Filled Steamed Buns
dough for steamed buns from My Grandmother's Chinese Kitchen


2 1/4 c. flour
3 1/2 t. baking powder
1/2 c. sugar
1/4 c. milk
1/8 c. water
3 T. Coconut Oil
12 T. peanut butter
1/2 c. jam, your favorite flavor
1/8 t. chili garlic sauce, or more to taste

Place dry ingredients in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook.  Turn to low speed and gradually add the milk until absorbed.  Add the water and the coconut oil and continue to knead until the dough comes together. Turn speed to medium and add water, a teaspoon at a time, as needed until dough becomes elastic. This took quite a while, about 10 minutes or so.  When dough is elastic, cover with a damp cloth and allow to rest for an hour before continuing with the recipe.

Roll the dough into a cylinder 16" long.  Cut off approx. 1" and flatten down into a disc.  Keep remaining dough covered with a damp towel in between uses.  Place 1 T. of peanut butter into the disc and fold the dough up around it pinching it at the top to seal.  Place on parchment paper until ready to steam.  Repeat until the dough and peanut butter is all used.  Place buns into a steamer lined with parchment paper and steam for 15-20 minutes.  (Mine took the full 20 minutes but were larger than the author's who made 16 buns as compared to my 12.)  Combine jam and chili garlic sauce in a small bowl.  Set aside.

When buns are done steaming glaze with the spicy jam and serve immediately with additional spicy jam for dipping.  Print Recipe

  3. How ingenious to fill a steamed bun with peanut butter, Wendy! Sweet red bean paste is a favorite in Malaysia where we lived for many moons but I was never that fond of it. Now, if they had filled the buns with your peanut butter? Different story.

    1. Yes, Stacy I was thinking of that red bean paste and how it is about the same consistency as peanut butter and thought, why not??

  10. Oh my goodness - this is so smart Wendy! Tender rolls stuffed with peanut butter sounds incredible. You are putting Reeses to shame! :)

    1. Well I don't know about that Mary Frances, maybe next time I will stick some chocolate in there as well or have a chocolate dipping sauce instead of the sweet and spicy sauce.
