Being raised in the Detroit, Michigan area, we have a ginger soda that we call Vernors. I didn't even realize that there was actually a soda called ginger ale until I went on vacation once and ordered a Vernors. The waitress looked at me like I had two heads. My Pops told her I wanted ginger ale and she brought me a glass. I was sooooo disappointed. Such is the tragedies in the life of a 6 year old.
You might wonder why they call it a Boston Cooler when it was made in Detroit. Vernors was created by Pharmacist, James Vernor upon his return home from the civil war. This was a happy accident that occurred when he found the syrup that he had created before he left had transformed into an entirely different drink during the 4 years he was gone.
The blending of the Vernors with ice cream is credited to Fred Sanders of Detroit based Sanders Confectionary. Who blended the two at his soda fountain. It is thought that the names is based on Boston Blvd. in Detroit.
Vernor's is available nationwide now but can be difficult to find outside of the Midwest. Thank goodness for the internet and mail order. If you have never tried Vernors you should try to find some near you and blend it up with some ice cream for a special summertime treat.

Never thought to use gingerale as the soda in a float! Sadly, we can't get Vernor's here.
