Monster Brains and Witches Brew #FoodnFlix

These fun recipes that I am sharing today are just like the movie by which they were inspired.... The Addams Family.

They are creepy, kooky, mysterious, spooky and altogether ooky.  And oh so much fun!!  Just like the film.

Delight your little ghosts and goblins by serving up Monster Brains and Witches Brew with dinner this Halloween.  They are spectacularly scary and ghoulishly good!!

Food 'n Flix

Food n Flix is a fun group led by Heather of All Roads Lead to the Kitchen.  Each month one of the members chooses a movie for us to watch and then we all create and share recipes that were inspired by the film.  You can learn how to join in the fun at the Guidelines post.

This month's film was The Addams Family and/or Addams Family Values chosen by Kimberly of Coffee and Casseroles.  You can learn more at the Announcement Post.

I had never watched either of these movies nor have I gone to see the new film released a couple of weeks ago.  However, I was a huge Addams Family fan when it first came on television and watched it incessantly as a child,  Such fond memories were brought back while watching this film.

My husband was also an Addams Family fan.  In fact, when we were first married and Tony and Nicole were just youngsters we had a Halloween  Birthday Party for Tony at our house. We
dressed as the Addams Family with Frank as Gomez, Me as Morticia, Tony as Pugsley, Nicole as Wednesday and Frank's sister, Roz as Uncle Fester.  It was so much fun!!

And somewhere there is a photo, that I was going to put in the space between these paragraphs.  But this was back in 1992, before digital.  I went through about 10 boxes of photos and finally found some from that party but not the family shot.  Which makes sense because that one was kept out and put out at Halloween for years.  We have moved 4 times since that party.  Who knows where that photo might be now?!

So, instead, let's fast forward to this year's birthday party for Amy.  We made dinner that included Monster Brains and Witches Brew that I am sharing with you today.  We didn't have Wednesday but we did have a Princess to help blow out the candles and then..........

While we were eating the cake, the Princess went into the bedroom and must have gotten cursed because when she came out she was a spooky skeleton!!!  The Addams Family has nothing on the Klik Family LOL.

There was food and food references in the Addam's Family Movie that came out in 1991 and that I viewed on television for this event.  During the watching of the movie I noticed:

  • Apple in Pugsley's mouth *Lunch bag with something alive *Cereal at neighbors *Chinese Food (take out) *Tuna (net) *? Eaten by Grandmama *Breakfast? *Salt *Muffins *Green stuff for breakfast *Brandy *Joy of Cooking *Grey's Anatomy *Chili? *Salad *Red gunk? *Green drink *Pugsley EntrĂ©e with mushrooms *Colorful cereal in motel *Lemonade *Tombstone Pizza *Girl Scout Cookies *Lemons *Noodle Soup *Bread *Fritos *Pumpkin *Apples (bobbing for) *Graveyard
I was tossing around these images in my head when I received a shipment of Adiago Wicked Teas that I had won in a contest held by Cam of Culinary Adventures with Camilla.  This changed my entire train of thought.  Now I knew that I wanted to make something using these Wicked Teas since they tied in so nicely with the movie this month.

Then the Teen asked Frank to run her up to the store because she wanted to get stuff to make a Halloween Basket for her boyfriend.  They came home with 2 HUGE bags of candy.  Mind you, we live in a rural area and get no beggars at our house.  And they also bought this brain mold, just because Frank thought it was cool.

Tea Gelatin Brains would be perfect.  I thought about calling them Lurch Brains but Lurch still needs his wits about him so instead I used the Monster Mash blend of caramel and cream teas with green jimmies and candy eyeballs to make Monster Brains.

It was a little off putting to my guests that the Monster Brains looked so real but they all were good sports and dug in.  The tea gave the brains a strong caramel flavor.  It was a fun dish to serve.

I also decided to make up a cauldron (or at least a crock pot) full of Witches Brew starting with the Candy Apple Concoction that contains vanilla tea, candy apple tea, apple pieces and red sugar crystals.

As guests started to arrive, I served it up right from the cauldron and for those adults who were feeling extra wicked I added a splash of Cinnamon Schnapps.

It was the perfect, welcoming drink as they came in from the blustery weather outside.   These were fun concoctions to make and I'm glad that I finally got to watch The Addams Family Movie.  I think we might seek out Addams Family Values to watch before Halloween and I'm thinking that brain mold might look very cool made with lime jello and cottage cheese.  Stay tuned folks...............

These realistic looking brains come together easily and are sure to be a hit with your little ghosts and goblins and even with the big zombies who enjoy celebrating Halloween.

ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 c. hot, caramel and vanilla flavored tea (or flavor of choice)
  • 1 c. cold water
  • 1 can fat free evaporated milk
  • 3 packets non flavored gelatin
  • blue and green food coloring
  • Also needed:  1 Brain jello mold

instructions:

How to cook Monster Brains

  1. Place the tea in a tea ball and steep  in hot water for about 5 minutes, until it is to your desired strength.  Remove the tea ball and bring the tea to a boil.  Sprinkle with the gelatin and stir until dissolved, remove from heat.
  2. Add 1 cup of cold water and the can of evaporated milk.  You will have an off white or light brown color at this point, and can use it as is or add blue and green food coloring, a drop at a time until you get the color you desire.
  3. I used 3 drops of blue and 2 drops of green to make my grey matter.
  4. Pour the mixture into a brain jello mold that has been liberally treated with cooking spray.  Place a layer of plastic wrap directly onto the gelatin and place in the refrigerator overnight.
  5. When ready to serve, place a plate on top of the mold and flip it over.  The brains will ooze right out onto the plate.
