Cut up some veggies, pour a glass of wine and stick the movie, Book Club, into the DVD player. It is time for FoodnFlix......
Our FoodnFlix Club is being hosted by Evelyne of CultureEatz. This fun group is led by Heather of All Roads Lead to the Kitchen. You can learn how to join on this page.
Evelyne asked us all to watch Book Club this month. I wanted to see this when it was out at the theater but my hubby is a Viet Nam Veteran and still hasn't forgiven Jane Fonda for her alleged betrayal of the POW troops.
This is definitely a chick flick, however, it has an all star cast and is laugh out loud funny. Even my husband who was ostensibly reading his ipad while I watched this film, laughed out loud a couple of times.
I don't recall food being mentioned at all in this film even though Mary Steenburgen plays a chef and there were snacks and wine at each gathering of the ladies. It is the story of 4 best friends who have been meeting each month for book club since they were in high school.
I loved the fact that this was a book that focused on the love life (or lack of) in people of my age group. Candace Bergen plays a high powered Federal Judge who has been divorced and has not had sex in 18 years. Jane Fonda plays a rich hotelier who has sex every chance she gets but never with anyone that she cares about. Mary Steenburgen, the chef, is happily married but sex is infrequent and mostly just a fond memory. Diane Keaton is recently widowed and trying to convince her daughters that she is not old and decrepit regardless of what they may think.
They end up reading the 50 Shades of Gray Trilogy and it begins to awaken feelings long held dormant. The results are humorous and fun. I would recommend this movie that also stars Craig Nelson, Andy Garcia, Don Johnson and Richard Dreyfuss. How could they go wrong?
Have you seen this movie? Have you read the 50 Shades of Gray Trilogy? I read them when they first came out. My favorite quote about these books came from my niece who said "Whooo Doggie, I feel like I'm sinning every time I turn the page". It has been years and I still laugh every time I recall that conversation.
I whipped up this dip that would be perfect served at Book Club. It is also a great dip for Game Day or Game Night. In fact, it is perfect for anytime and easily made with ingredients you probably already have on hand.

Ha ha ha I can't belive your hubby laughed, let alone stayed in the same room. There is hope. Really lovely dip Wendy. Thank you for participating.
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting Evelyne.
DeleteThat's so cute that Frank pretended to read on his iPad and was watching surreptitiously. I will have to try this with a different kind of bean since D reacts to chickpeas.
ReplyDeleteYes, I think white beans would be delicious as well Cam.
DeleteI spotted a hummus-like dip at a lot of their book club sessions. Love this take. Might have to whip it up for Sunday's festivities!
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy it as much as we did Debra.
