My friend Sue of Palatable Pastime came up with this Dead and Breakfast idea....isn't it the most fun way to celebrate Halloween yet?

I can't wait to see all of these fun sounding recipes. I found mine on the Pillsbury website, using refrigerated crescent roll sheets. I didn't have any crescent roll sheets in the refrigerator but I did have a sheet of puffed pastry in the freezer. Game on.
I rolled the dough to about 12x15" and then cut that into 9 equal sized pieces.
I lightly scored each of the nine pieces into thirds being careful not to cut through.
I placed some hazelnut spread in the center third.
Then cut through each side into horizontal strips.
I cut bananas in half crosswise and then cut each half in half lengthwise.
Lay one quarter of each banana on top of the hazelnut spread.
Wrap it up mummy style by crisscrossing the strips from the sides over the banana.
Coat with an egg wash to help the dough adhere to itself.
Bake them to a beautiful golden puffy brown.
I had a hungry toddler and teen breathing down my neck so I didn't wait for them to cool before drizzling them with glaze. I'm sure that they would have looked better had I waited but the taste was still the same and the girls LOVED them. I thought they were cloyingly sweet and Frank is not a hazelnut spread fan. But, after all, Halloween is all about the kids anyway. This is a fun little project to make with them to start off the day. They loved "wrapping" the mummies and brushing with the egg wash.
I think that you could also use peanut butter in this recipe for equally good results. I know that my husband would have preferred that. I even thought that a raspberry jam would have been a good choice with the red resembling blood.
Play with it. Have fun. After all, recipes are only a guideline offering inspiration to your creative side. Happy Hauntings Everyone.

Banana Mummy Rolls

Your little Ghosts and Goblins will be thrilled with these adorable pastry mummies filled with chocolate hazelnut spread and bananas. A perfect way to start off their Halloween Day.
ingredients:
1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed per package instructions
1 c. chocolate hazelnut spread
3 bananas, you will have extra
1 egg
1 t. water
1/2 powdered sugar
2 t. milk
Candy eyes
instructions:
Roll out puffed pastry to approximately 12x15". Cut into 9 equal sized squares. Lightly score each square into thirds and then cut horizontal strips about 1/4" wide down each side of each square.
Spoon about 1 1/2 Tablespoons of hazelnut spread down the middle section. Cut each banana in half crosswise and then each half in half lengthwise, quartering each banana. Place one quarter of banana onto the hazelnut spread in the middle section of each pastry piece. Crisscross the side pieces over the banana to make the appearance of a mummy. Place onto a baking pan that has been lined with parchment or a silicone mat.
Whisk together the egg and water. Brush onto each individual mummy. Bake in a preheated 375* oven for 15-20 minutes, until golden brown.
Let cool to room temperature. Whisk together the powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon of the milk adding more milk as needed to reach desired consistency.

What a fun idea and so cute! I bet they'd be great with regular peanut butter as well. I'll have to put these on my list!

ReplyDeleteYes and they had fun with it.
DeleteYour mummy-wrapping idea is great, as are the kiddie-friendly flavors. I happen to hate both bananas and nutella, though, so it's not for me! Yes to raspberry jam.
