I had never heard of Bittman before this challenge. He is the food writer for the NY Times so I probably had made some of his recipes without realizing it. Cam was a long time fan of Bittman's and loved the idea behind this cookbook. She invited other bloggers to join her in a year long challenge of creating one recipe per week inspired by the book. I was happy to join her. We would be happy to have you join us too. Learn more about it in Cam's information post.
I chose the following chapters for this month's recipes:
- Vegetable soups. I made a Minsetrone that I served up as a first course at a family dinner.
- Roasted Chicken. I was inspired to make a Chinese style recipe.
- Braised Potatoes. I made this version, braised in wine and served it as a side to the roasted chicken.
- Condiments. I decided to make this Homemade Teriyaki Sauce that I'm sharing today.
I never realized that homemade teriyaki would be so easy to make and require products that I always have on hand. I used garlic paste and ginger paste but will use fresh when I have it available. I won't be buying bottled teriyaki any longer.
It only takes minutes to make, will last for months in the refrigerator and is much less expensive than the store bought version.
I used it to flavor some stir fry veggies that were served along with the roast chicken and braised potatoes. It was the perfect accompaniment.
