This month's film for Food n Flix was chosen by Debra of Eliot's Eats. Debra chose the dark comedy hit from a few years ago, August: Osage County. You can read about how she came about choosing this film in her announcement post, I was excited because I had wanted to see this when it was at the theaters but never got the opportunity and then I forgot about it. If you, like me, haven't seen the film yet you still have tons of time (all of August) to get it, watch it and join us in sharing what food this film inspires in you.
This movie had a wonderful cast including Ewan McGregor, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Sam Shephard and Juliette Lewis, and they all did an excellent job of portraying their characters. This dysfunctional family all end up coming back together when their alcoholic father, no longer being able to cope with their drug addicted mother, commits suicide. Meryl Streep, as Mommy Dearest (oops that's a different movie) does an excellent job, as always, and you find it very easy to dislike her. The family of 3 daughters are equally dysfunctional and struggling with their own baggage and their own lives.
This movie made me laugh and made me cry. It made me angry which reflects, again, what a wonderful job the actors did. I am glad that it was chosen for this month. I watched and listened for food references and there were plenty from biscuits and gravy to salad. There was fried chicken and casseroles. There were plenty of alcoholic beverages. They served catfish, green beans and cranberries. And there was pie, several times during this movie there was pie or references to pie.
So I made pie and I made a pie that was chock full of nuts...just like this movie!!
It was delicious, topped with vanilla Ice Cream and Sander's Hot Fudge.
A locally made, Michigan Hot Fudge that is the absolute best!!
Brownie Pecan Pie
1/2 c. butter
1 oz unsweetened chocolate
2 oz semi sweet chocolate
3 eggs
1 1/4 c. sugar
1/2 c. flour
1/4 t. salt
1 c. chopped pecans
1 pie crust
Melt butter and chocolate together. Set aside to cool.
Prepare pie pan with crust, cutting and crimping as needed. Set aside.
Place eggs, sugar, flour and salt into the large bowl of stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment and mix until well combined. Add the chocolate and continue to mix until incorporated. Stir in nuts and pour into the prepared pie crust. Bake in a preheated 350* oven for 45-50 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the middle removes cleanly. Print Recipe
