Grilled Cheese Breakfast Sandwich and a Book Review #FoodieHolidays

Grilled Cheese Breakfast Sandwich

It's National Grilled Cheese Month.....

Sneha of Sneha's Recipe asked if we would like to join her in celebrating this National Food Holiday.  I think food holidays are fun and they get me to think outside the box.  I was happy to join her.

I decided to make a breakfast sandwich while reading a novel that had many scenes in diners over breakfast.  I will tell you more about that novel in a minute but first, go take a look at the wonderful dessert grilled cheese that Sneha served up.

A Killing on the Hill

I had just finished reading A Killing on the Hill by Robert Dugoni.  I was provided this book by Megan Beatie of MB Communications in return for an honest review.  I did not receive any monetary compensation for this post.  All writings and opinions are strictly my own.

This novel is set in Seattle during the Depression and was inspired by real-life events in which a mobster, George Moore, called George Miller in the novel, shot and killed a former prize fighter claiming it was self-defense.

The novel features William (Shoe) Schumacher, new to Seattle and working as a newspaper reporter assigned to the Police/Fire/Court beat.  He just happens to be in the lobby of the Police Department when the Detective in charge and the Prosecutor invite him to go with them to the crime scene.

Shoe is new to the business.  He is young and anxious to prove himself to his mentor and editor who has taken him under his wing.  His gut tells him there is more to this story than meets the eye and he is determined to discover the truth.

Shoe is hungry.  Hungry to make a name for himself.  Hungry to be a success so he can help his family during these hard times.  Hungry in the real sense of the word, getting only one meal a day provided at his boarding house and loathe to spend any money he could send home to buy more.

The Detective often takes Shoe with him to local restaurants where food is free to police and, though Shoe is not sure it is ethical, to Shoe when he is with him.  There were several free breakfasts so I decided that this Sandwich would be one that Shoe and the Detective might enjoy at one of those diners.

The author learned of this crime when going through documents that had belonged to his wife's grandfather who was one of the defense attorneys in the real-life crime trial.  I really enjoyed this novel and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys murder mysteries or historical fiction.  This novel is the best of both.

Grilled Cheese Breakfast Sandwich

Grilled Cheese Breakfast Sandwich

Maple Glazed Bacon, Fried Egg, and Cheese sandwiched between French Bread and Grilled to a golden brown. Breakfast has never tasted this good.

Ingredients

  • 3 slices, pre-cooked bacon (I used Kirkland brand)
  • 1/2 T. maple syrup
  • 2 T. butter, room temperature, divided
  • 1 egg
  • 2 slices American cheese
  • 2 slices French bread

Instructions

  1. Place the bacon on a microwave-safe plate and brush both sides with the syrup. Microwave on high for 30 seconds. Set aside.
  2. Melt 1 Tablespoon of the butter in a skillet over med-high heat. Add the egg. Use a knife to break the yolk and fry until completely set. Set aside.
  3. Butter one side of each slice of bread with the remaining butter. Place one slice, onto a griddle or hot skillet, butter side down. Add a slice of cheese, the bacon, the egg, and the second slice of cheese on top of the bread on the griddle or pan. Top with the second slice of bread, butter side up.
  4. Cover and cook until the bread is golden brown, about 2 minutes. Flip, cover and cook until the cheese is melted and the other side is golden brown.
