Chinese Takeout with an Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc and the Weekly Menu#WorldWineTravel

This month we are visiting the New Zealand Island of Marlborough with our World Wine Travel Group.
I found a bottle of Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc that I poured one night when we ordered in Chinese.

Chinese Food and NZ wine
We have a Chinese carry out by our house that has the best Orange Chicken that I have ever found at a restaurant.  Sometimes I awaken in the morning craving that Orange Chicken.  Such was the case this day.  As it was nearing time for our World Wine Travel event that was taking us to Marlborough Island, I decided to open the bottle I had purchased and see how it paired with this sweet and hot dish.

Wine

Oyster Bay's first wine, released in 1990, was their Sauvignon Blanc.  It won a Gold Medal and the Marquis de Goulaine Trophy for ‘Best Sauvignon Blanc in the world’.  They own 2 Vineyards, one in Hawke's Bay and one in Marlborough, chosen for the cool climates and alluvial soils.

I can see why it got such accolades and I'm sure that it has only improved in the last couple decades.  This wine pours nearly clear and is crisp, bright and acidic.  It paired ok with the Orange Chicken that tended to over power it a bit.  I personally would enjoy this wine sans food while floating in the pool on a hot summer day.  Perhaps that is just because as I'm writing this it is in the low teens here in Michigan.

We did have a smattering of snow with which to kick off the holiday season and the sun has peeked out a bit so I'm really not complaining.  I will enjoy the blessings of this season while looking forward to some pool days in a few months when we head to Maui.

Last week was very busy.  This week quiets down a bit and then we will be in warp speed as we head towards Christmas.  We will be using most of  the Thanksgiving Leftovers this weekend with Pot Pie tonight and Turkey Frame Soup tomorrow.

Cheeseboard

I started off our Thanksgiving Feast with a Cheeseboard for guests to enjoy as they arrived and were awaiting dinner.  There were 15 of us for dinner and a cheeseboard is a great way to fight off the hangries while enjoying a pre dinner cocktail or glass of wine.

Speaking of Cheeseboards, my friend Cam of Culinary Adventures with Camilla has some great tips and recipes for you to use during this Holiday Season.  You can learn more by Joining the Culinary Cam Community.  You will find information not only on Cheeseboards but on Cookie Platters too.  Perfect for this time of year.  You can purchase a digital download for yourself or as a gift for someone you love.  And as my and Cam's gift to you, you will receive a $5 discount if you use the code WENDYSFRIEND when you order.

The rest of the week will be spent finishing up the Christmas Shopping, filling and mailing the Christmas Cards and Planning Menus for the upcoming Christmas Season.  What's going on with you this week?

  1. I can see that the orange chicken would overpower that wine.

  2. Now I'm wondering what restaurant in my area serves orange chicken. LOL! These Marlborough NZ Sauvignon Blanc wines are crisp!.Have you considered an off-dry white to pair with it?

  3. Maybe a riesling would work... never tried to pair this dish with wine but that's the direction I'd go.
