Tang Cheesecake #FoodnFlix

How about a blast from the past with this Easy No Bake Tang Cheesecake.  Do you remember Tang from when you were a child?  They still sell this iconic orange drink and it makes a wonderful sweet and tart cheesecake.

Elizabeth of Literature and Limes invited us to join her this month in watching Moonrise Kingdom.  You can learn more and join in the fun at her invitation post.

Moonrise Kingdom

This 2012 film by Wes Anderson features an all star cast and focuses on two young teens who decide to run away together.  I had never heard of this film and ordered it up one evening on Netflix when I had some free time.

I wish I could say that it was a good use of that free time but, honestly, I didn't care for this movie.  It didn't matter that it starred Bruce Willis, Ed Norton, Bill Murray and Frances McDormand.  The problem was it is a Wes Anderson film and I am not a fan.  Except for SING....I did enjoy SING.

The boy in the movie, a foster child, runs away from a boy scout summer camp to be with the girl who runs away from home.  Being a boy scout, the boy has some skills that help them to get by until all the adults in their lives can get themselves together enough to find them.

So, onto the food in the movie.  Which was also disappointing for me.  This is what I noted as I watched the film:
  • dinner plate, ribs?
  • wine
  • breakfast
  • coffee pot
  • sandwich
  • brandy
  • tang
  • beef jerky
  • venison
  • turtles
  • fish
  • cat food
  • corn on the cob
  • bologna sandwich?
  • sausage
  • beer
Not a lot to go on, but a lot to inspire some creativity.  I thought about revisiting and updating my Snapping Turtle Soup recipe.  I have some venison left in my freezer and thought about pulling that out to make a meal.  I also have some panfish in the freezer that I thought about making. But I kept coming back to that container of Tang that was sitting on the counter.

Tang

This film was set in the 1960's.  I was born in 1958 so a lot of things in this film brought back childhood memories.  When I saw that jar of tang I remembered drinking it as a child.  It was called the Astronaut drink and was touted as being taken into space during the 60's as part of the astronauts menu.

I didn't even know if Tang was still available but a google search revealed that not only is it still available but a recipe for a no bake cheesecake using Tang popped up from Kraft foods.

Tang Cheesecake

This recipe is straight from the 60's as well.  It is EXACTLY something my Mom would have made, using all the convenience foods that were popular during that time.

So, while I didn't enjoy the movie itself, I did enjoy all the memories of childhood that it brought to mind. For that, I am grateful to Elizabeth.  Perhaps a movie that inspires all of these memories IS a good use of some free time.

Now to head off and search for some more Tang recipes so I can use up the rest of the cansiter.....Tang Cookies anyone?

    1. Oh no worries Debra. Different strokes for different folks. I have watched many worse movies. When our son, Tony, was young he picked out "Dupa, the Polish Vampire" for us to watch LOL.

  3. I made this using Country Time lemonade mix 'cause that was what was in the pantry. I upped the amount of powdered drink mix by a tablespoon to make up for the Mandarin oranges not used. It was really good. I've made it 2 more times since the first time. It is light, just right for dessert after a big meal from the barbeque. Living in Arizona, I appreciate the no bake part for the perfect summertime dessert.
