Let's Celebrate Thanksgiving by Eating and Drinking Locally #WinePW

 Our WinePW group is sharing our thoughts on wine from Under the Radar Regions this month.  I live in Michigan and we have a lot of wineries on the west side of our state.  However, when people think about Michigan they think about lakes, sand dunes, fall colors, boating, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, skating, etc.  We have all of those wonderful things but we also have wine, whiskey and beer.

When Susannah of Avvinare invited us to explore Under the Radar US Wine Regions, I knew I wanted to stay true to my home state, Michigan.  I am excited to see what regions the others have chosen to share with us today.  We are all meeting up for Twitter Chat this morning at 11 AM ET.  We would love to have you join us.  You will find us by following #WinePW.  Here are some of the topics we will be discussing......

The 45th Parralel runs right through northern Michigan.  This is the same parralel that runs through Piedmont, Italy, Bordeaux France and Oregon's Williamette Valley, USA.

The wine I have chosen to showcase today is a Winter White from Leelanau Cellars. This winery was established by the Jacobson family in 1974 when they decided to turn one of their cherry orchards into a vineyard.  Michigan is also the Cherry Capitol of the world and Cherry wine is very popular in the area, as well.

Winter White is an off dry wine.  More on the sweet side.  Not my kind of wine but a wine I like to have on hand during the holidays for those who prefer a sweeter wine. It does pair well with many of the foods that you might make for your Thanksgiving Feast.  Especially if, like me, you try to eat seasonally and locally.

It paired very nicely with this Creamy Cauliflower and Pear Soup that would be a very nice start to your Thanksgiving Dinner.

I moved to a dryer wine with the roasted poultry and Apple Kohlrabi Slaw but those who stayed with the Winter White said that it was very nice with both of those dishes.

It makes me feel good to support our local farmers and businesses, especially during the holidays.  I think this is even more important this year as we have all been so terrible affected by this pandemic.

  2. So much fun to read about Michigan. I had no idea that it had so much to offer or that it was such a great place for Cherries. I have never had a Michigan wine and its on my bucket list. Yes, this time of year, it reminds us all how much we have to be thankful for and the pandemic has made life hard for so many people from all different walks of life. Cheers to supporting local businesses. Susannah

  3. I enjoyed trying Michigan wines awhile back. This white seems like crowd pleaser! That soup with the pear sounds really interesting.

  4. Hmmm... I've never had a Michigan wine but sounds like I should! Didn't know the state is famous for its cherries. I have new items for my bucket list after reading your post!
