Lihapullat (Finnish Meatballs) #EattheWorld

These delicious Finnish Meatballs reminded me of Norwegian Meatballs with a deeper, darker gravy.  Very delicious and satisfying.  Comfort food at it's finest.

Join us as we visit Finland in our Eat the World challenge........

Eat the World is a great group led by Evelyne of CulturEatz.  This month she invited us to visit Finland.

Check out all the wonderful Finnish dishes prepared by fellow Eat the World members and share with #eattheworld. Click here to find out how to join and have fun exploring a country a month in the kitchen with us!

We are assigned a new country each month.  We make recipes from the chosen country and share our results on the 10th day at 10 AM ET.  It is so much fun learning of other cultures through the foods they eat.

These moist, tender meatballs are easy to make and cook quickly for a wonderful, cozy, weeknight meal.  The Teen, who is not a meat fan, ate two large servings for dinner.

I served these meatballs over mashed potatoes with a side of corn.  Just like I loved when I was a kid.  The Finnish website on which I found this recipe suggested serving with potatoes and grated carrots.  It also recommended Lingonberry jam and gherkins as sides.

It was a delicious and easy meal that the whole family enjoyed the night before leaving on vacation for a week.  It was nice to have a homey, comforting meal before a week of restaurant fare.

I am anxious to try all the other amazing recipes being shared today and I can't wait to see where we are visiting next month.  Hope that you can join us as we Eat the World.......

These delicious Finnish Meatballs reminded me of Norwegian Meatballs with a deeper, darker gravy. Very delicious and satisfying. Comfort food at it's finest.

ingredients:

  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 2 slices bread, pulsed in food processor to fine crumbs
  • 1/2 c. half and half cream
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 t. olive oil
  • 1 egg
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 t. allspice
  • 1 T.  olive oil
  • 2 T.  Butter
  • 2 T. flour

instructions:

How to cook Lihapullat (Finnish Meatballs)

  1. Combine the bread crumbs and cream in a large bowl.  Set aside.
  2. Cook the onion in a teaspoon of olive oil in a large skillet, over med high heat until softened.  Add to the bread mixture along with the egg and ground beef.  Season with salt, pepper and allspice.
  3. With clean hands, mix until well combined.  Take approximately 1/4 cup of the meat and shape into a ball, continue until all meat is used.  You may need to wet your hands occasionally as the meatball mixture is very loose and sticky.
  4. Using the same pan as for the onions, heat 1 Tablespoon of olive oil over med high heat.  Add the meatballs and brown on all sides, about 5 minutes, in batches.  Remove to a plate lined with paper towels until all batches are done.  Set aside.
  5. Add the butter to the juices remaining in the pan, stir in the flour and cook for a minute or two,  add 1 cup of water and bring to a boil, cooking and stirring until thick and bubbly.  Add more water, if needed to desired consistency for gravy.
  6. Return the meatballs to the gravy and cook for another 5-8 minutes until desired temperature is reached.

  5. When do you add the half and half? To the gravy or to the meatballs?

    1. In step 1 it has you combine the cream (1/2 and 1/2) with the bread crumbs. Sorry for the confusion.
