Food n Flix...Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

Our Food n Flix film for this month is Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. You can watch part 1 or part 2 or both.  Then when you are finished enjoying the movie you can enjoy getting creative in the kitchen and making a recipe that was inspired by the movie.  It is much fun and you should join us!!

It is an older movie so I was able to find it playing on Nick tv.   I did see this film ( the first one) many years ago when it first came out. I was caring for my great nephew, Dylan, and my great niece, Abby and we took Mom and went and saw it on 3D.  What a hoot....I don't remember much of the movie but I do remember Mom yelling because "people are throwing things at me".  It was hilarious.  I laughed throughout the whole movie and don't think I was looking at the screen 80% of the time because I was busy watching Mom and her reaction.

So this time I actually sat and watched the movie.  I was home by myself so the only distractions were the dogs wanting out and in and out and in and out.....well, you get the idea.  Today all my laughing was from watching the movie which, I thought, was a lot of fun.

It rained all manner of foods in this little town that was once only known for it's sardines.  For a birthday celebration, the town was covered completely in ice cream with hot fudge rivers.  It was beautiful and colorful and the kids were ecstatic.  Shortly thereafter, there was a gigantic jello mold filled with more jello and it was bouncy and jiggly and impressive.  The perfect place to get to know someone and fall in love!!  It would have been even better had it been red jello instead of orange LOL.

Soon, as with anything that is not done in moderation, there were serious problems and a decision needed to be made as to whether Flint, the creator of the food maker, needed to listen to the good (his father) and do what he knows is right or whether he should listen to the evil (the mayor) and his false promises of fame and fortune that will bring happiness regardless of the cost.

A huge storm began to brew with a spaghetti funnel cloud that spewed meatballs and was destroying the town.  This finally opened Flint's eyes and he tried to stop the madness he created but, of course, evil (the mayor) did not care about what all this excess would do to the people of the town he only cared about his own fame and fortune with no regard for others.  The mayor intercepted Flint as he tried to turn the machine off and all communication with the machine was lost.  A huge storm of all you can eat Las Vegas style buffet was going to soon fall from the sky and destroy the world as we know it.

Seeing the error of his ways, Flint runs off and hides in his remorse.  His father, who loves him with an unconditional love, seeks him out and encourages him to repent and repair the destruction he helped to create.  The right road is not always the easy road to take and Flint soon finds himself travelling a rocky, food strewn,  path in order to undo the havoc he created.  But he persevered and all was right in the world!

While I could have been inspired to make any number of things from this movie....there was every kind of food you can imagine from apps to desserts...I finally settled on giving you my recipe for grilled corn on the cob.  I chose this recipe for many reasons:

  • It is corn season so Frank insists we have corn at every dinner that we eat at home from now until the season is over.
  • I have already served it on the cob boiled in sugar water, steamed in the microwave and off the cob sauteed with other vegetables in butter and it is only the first week of the season.
  • I loved the scene where the fortune cookie broke open warning the people on the bridge that they would soon be squashed my a huge ear of corn.
  • It is easy and delicious.
  • It is made with olive oil instead of butter, although feel free to use butter instead if you want.
  • I love corn and basil together.
  • It goes well with my Tomato and Mozzarella Panninis that I had planned for dinner tonight.

To chiffonade basil, roll the leaves into a tight ball and slice thinly.

Place an ear of corn on a piece of aluminum foil.
Drizzle with Olive Oil, season with Salt and Pepper and sprinkle with the basil.

Wrap and Cook on a Grill over Med High heat for 5-20 minutes.

Delicious!!

Grilled Corn on the Cob

1 or 2 ear of corn per person, shucked and all silk removed
Olive oil
Kosher Salt
Freshly Cracked Pepper
Chiffonade of Basil

Place each ear of corn onto a piece of aluminum foil.  Drizzle with olive oil, season with salt and pepper and sprinkle with basil.  Wrap the foil around the ears and grill over med high heat for 15 minutes, turning occasionally to allow all sides to slightly brown.  Print Recipe

    1. Oh it's just that instead of salting the water when we boil corn we sugar the water. We normally do this early in the season when the corn is not quite as sweet as it will get later.

  5. Is it corn harvest time already? I've been out in the country a few times this week, and some of the corn plants were de-tasseled and looked picked, but others still had their ears.

  7. This was a fun pick, wasn't it. I think I kind of missed out on corn season this year. We only bought a few ears. Will have to pin this for next year. Frank sounds like The Hubs.....he had requested garden tomatoes at every meal. Definitely can oblige with what we are getting from the garden!
